KUMIKO LAMP
KUMIKO LAMP
**Bookable via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/kumiko-coasters-56/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/kumiko-coasters-56/) **⋆⋆⋆** **Course:** Intro to Japanese Joinery – Kumiko Woodwork Lamp **Suitable for:** Absolute beginners. No prior experience in woodworking is required for this course. **About:** This evening course shows you the basics of setting out and cutting the traditional Kumiko woodwork designs to create a lamp. If you haven’t already discovered the Japanese wood craft of Kumiko, you are in for a treat. Kumiko is a technique that uses no nails or hardware, just precise joints to keep furniture and even houses together. It is intricate and functional and a lot of fun to make. Using a small tool set and simple techniques this quiet craft can yield some spectacular pieces. The traditional handicraft has been handed down for centuries but now artisans are taking the age-old concept and applying the designs to more modern-day household items. This is an ideal follow up workshop from the Kumiko coaster one day workshop which introduces you to the basics of setting out and cutting the traditional designs. It is also suitable for confident beginners. The Kumiko lamp uses traditional Japanese tools. The outer frame is created in walnut and the mini Kumiko screen is composed of cleverly cut bass wood to form a modern version of an ancient *Ijutsu* design. The small pieces are cut using an accurate shooting board and a sharp hand plane, then slid into place and backed with *Shoji* paper. The designs for *Kumiko* pieces aren’t chosen randomly. In fact, many of the nearly 200 patterns used today have been around since the Edo era (1603-1868). Each design has a meaning or is mimicking a pattern in nature that is thought to be a good omen. The designs are not just pretty, they also distribute light and wind in a calming and beautiful way. It may look complicated but in reality, like all woodwork – it’s just a series of steps. Give it a try – you may do better than you expect. Auram Desforges, who grew up working on wood frame houses with his father in Canada has devised this elegant lamp. This course is held over 6 evenings and is particularly suitable for those who have completed the one day [Kumiko coaster](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/kumiko-coasters/) workshop. The use of all tools, materials and LED tea light is included. The dimensions of the finished lamp is 132mmH x 132mmD x 132mmW.

T is for Thames River Police Museum (Wapping)
John Burns, the trade unionist once famously said of London’s river "Every drop is liquid history". In 1798 a newly formed body of police officers brought much needed law and order to that most historic of rivers. The Thames River Police was the first policing body ever to be set up. Its sole objective was the prevention and detection of crime on the Thames and it was to become the forerunner of many other police forces throughout the world. **Join us for a rare entrance into this museum as part of the ‘Wapping Shindig’ community event run by the Turks Head Charity. (Website under construction).** This small museum located at Wapping police station, which for more than two centuries has been the headquarters of the River Police. The museum is housed in the old carpenters workshop and is administered by the Thames Police Association. It gives an insight into the history of the policing of the River Thames. **Read more here: Review from Wharf Life - [here](https://wharf-life.com/interviews/thames-river-police-museum-is-a-hidden-gem-in-wapping/)** **MEET DETAILS:** **FROM 1.15.pm : MEET AT Captain Kidd pub -** 108 Wapping High Street E1W 2NE **(optional) for a cuppa/ drink before we go in** **2pm: ENTER THE MUSEUM together.** Address: **Thames Police Museum,** Wapping Police Station, Wapping High Street, Wapping, E1W 2NE London Self guided look around. Address: tbc in the event whatsapp group, for attendees likely on the day. **TICKETS:** **The Museum is free, but we are limiting our group size. [Here](http://www.thamespolicemuseum.org.uk/museum.html). **EVENT WHATSAPP GROUP:** Please join the event WhatsApp group to help you find the group on the day. Coram Fields Summer Hang Out
Coram Fields Summer Hang Out
After the success of last year, we're going back to Coram's Field. This is a large children's-only park in Bloomsbury, which is only accessible to adults if they are accompanied by a child under 16. There is a great adventure playground for older children, a large sandpit playground, a paddling pool, a wildlife garden and a large central lawn to sit on. Something for ages 0 -12. Join us for a relaxed meet-up on the lawn where the kids can enjoy a bit of freedom, and we can form a base on the central lawn. Bring a blanket, and obviously a picnic if you like. As there is a paddling pool, if the weather is good, maybe pack some swimmers and swim nappies if needed for your children. Ditto buckets and spades if your little one(s) like to play in the sand (my kid is big into digging holes...). I will aim to make a base on the central green. To find us, look out for the pride flags. I will send my phone number to everyone who has RSVP-ed as attending by the night before, as it can be harder to remain seated on a base now that my child is older. Call me when you arrive. The park is accessible by: Tube - Russell Square/King's Cross/Holborn/Chancery Lane Train - King's Cross Bus - 17, 45, & 46 on Gray's Inn Road or 7, 59, 68, 91, 168, or 188 at Russel Square. There is no parking onsite but metered parking locally.

🛍️Offline Women Go Thrifting
🛍️Offline Women Go Thrifting
Step away from the online ads and join Offline Women Going Thrifting. Modern shopping is often fast and wasteful, so we are heading out to find a better way. Thrifting is an act of resistance against a system that wants us to keep buying new things. Every item we buy second-hand is one less thing in a landfill, thousands of liters of water saved and supports a charity at the same time. In Charity Shops we can find pieces that were made to last, high-quality fabrics and timeless styles that haven't been dictated by an algorithm. We will meet outside the **Octavia Foundation** in Pimlico (where fashion insiders go), just a few minutes from Victoria Station. We will tuck away our devices before exploring the cluster of around seven charity shops nearby. Please bring a reusable bag and your best eye for hidden gems. Come as you are and leave with unique finds and a lighter footprint on the earth. P.S. Thank you, Angie, for suggesting this wonderful idea.
