Thesis:
Culture is the result of society trying to adapt to circumstances.
Culture consists of adaptive mechanisms evolved through time.
Thus cultures are what they had to be.
Therefore culture has its legit reasons and therefore should be respected.
Counter thesis:
Culture is man made, the result of human will.
In so far as human will is involved, it warrants critique.
Such that culture shoud not be excuses but object for critical accountability,
retrospectively, and in present tense.
Questions:
- How is culture dictated by, and limited by, socio-economic conditions?
- Of countries A & B with identical socio-economic conditions, could you have different cultures?
- Is it possible to reverse the relation such that culture dictates socio-economic conditions rather than the inverse?
- Any examples of cultural traits that you know of to consider?
- What other possible externality factors besides socio-economic?
- On the global scale, to what extent are cultures converging and/or diverging?
- Is nationalism about culture? If not, then what drives?
- Could this be a debate about free will? Y/N?
