/// Weekly Newsletter of the Hiking & Nature Meetup / July 2, 2009 ///

From: Susanne
Sent on: Thursday, July 2, 2009, 4:10 PM
Dear Hiking & Nature Meetup members,

As I mentioned last week, Andre posted two alternative overnight trips for the same weekend in July, one car camping and one backpacking trip and he's going to decide which one of them he's going to do based on the response from the members these will receive. Therefore, if you're interested in an overnight trip to the Adirondacks, you should RSVP now. Links below.

If you want to go to Iceland with Andre and you haven't been at any of the Iceland information dinners, please email him directly.

TENTATIVE LIST OF FUTURE EVENTS

Please note that the events below may be changed or canceled, based on hike leader's availability, weather, and the number of interested members. This is not our complete schedule for the season, more events are added frequently.

July 4, Saturday, Independence Day
The DAY HIKE FOLLOWED BY POTLUCK PICNIC AND FIREWORKS is full, but if you have a car and want to come, email Liz, she might be able to add you. Info and RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/hiking-NYC/calendar/10719089/

July 10-12 or 17-19 (Fri to Sun)
Andre posted two alternative overnight trips for this weekend. He'll do the one for which there is more interest. So please RSVP soon. Currently, the only RSVP option for one of the trips is "waiting list" and that's on purpose, it doesn't mean that the trip is full. One of the trips is BACKPACKING IN THE ADIRONDACKS http://www.meetup.com/hiking-NYC/calendar/10683159/, the other one is a CAMPING & HIKING IN THE ADIRONDACKS http://www.meetup.com/hiking-NYC/calendar/10682785/

July 25 or 26 (Sat or Sun)
Suzanne might be organizing a DAY HIKE WITH SWIMMING OR A BEACH TRIP.

August 20 to 29
Andre will go to ICELAND, GREEN ISLAND OF GLACIERS AND GEYSERS. Possible extension (or alternative trip) August 30 to September 1. If interested and you didn't come to any of the two dinners last week, you should really come to the dinner today. Please read the info first before you RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/hiking-NYC/calendar/10465043/

September 5-7 (Saturday to Monday, Labor Day)
Another 3-DAY LABOR-DAY-WEEKEND TRIP TO PENNSYLVANIA WITH KAYAKING, HORSEBACK RIDING, AND WHITE WATER RAFTING, just like Labor Day weekend last year. Not posted yet.

EVENTS OF THE LAST SEVEN DAYS

On Saturday, 16 of us had a great day kayaking the Delaware. We were quite lucky with the weather, it didn't rain at all while we were kayaking, we were already on the way back in the cars when we got into a downpour. There were lots of clouds, mostly white ones, but this was welcome as it kept the amount of UV down a bit. Water levels were high, the sandy beach where we had lunch last year was completely submerged. This also made the river a bit faster than usual and we covered 13 miles in only 3.5 hours without too much effort. Reviews and photos are here: http://www.meetup.com/hiking-NYC/calendar/10544776/

This is Andre's report about the backpacking trip in Harriman: "Six of us had a great time backpacking through Harriman. We hiked for about 8 hours on Saturday. It was hot and humid, so we welcomed a couple of cooling showers. The sky cleared just in time for dinner and we enjoyed a classic campfire under a starry sky. Our sore muscles called for an easy day on Sunday so we hung around a lake, enjoyed the perfect weather, and caught the early train home. The high point of the weekend was seeing two black bears only 30 feet from the trail! (Luckily it was mid-afternoon and we were miles from our campsite.) I've always heard that there were bears in Harriman, but I never saw one until now." Photos and reviews: http://www.meetup.com/hiking-NYC/calendar/10630451/

Have a nice weekend and a fun fourth of July,

Suzanne
