Persona is one of Ingmar Bergman’s most influential and enigmatic films, exploring identity, silence, and the fragile boundary between self and other. The story follows a renowned actress who suddenly stops speaking after a breakdown, driven by a deep inner conflict about her life and motherhood.

She is placed under the care of a young nurse, and together they retreat to an isolated house by the sea. What begins as a quiet recovery becomes an intense psychological encounter, where their personalities seem to blur and merge in unsettling ways.
Minimalist and deeply intimate, the film uses striking black and white imagery and powerful performances to create a hypnotic and thought provoking experience. Long considered controversial and widely analyzed, it remains a landmark of world cinema.
This screening is part of Eye’s Classics programme and was selected by Hildur Guðnadóttir for the Holland Festival 2026.
