About us

Welcome to the Amsterdam Film Group. Join us as we explore the magic of cinema! Our group is dedicated to bringing "cinemates" (people who enjoy watching films with others) together to watch films in cinemas and engage in lively discussions afterward. Whether you’re into foreign films, sci-fi, classics, action, drama, or anything in between, there’s a place for you here.

The hosts will do their best to organize screenings of different genres of films at various cinemas in Amsterdam. Everyone is responsible for buying their ticket (a link will be posted in the event description). This is an open space where group members can organize film events themselves. The hosts will post events for films they are interested in, but we encourage everyone to do the same! If you find a film you'd like to watch together and discuss afterward, please feel free to post it in the WhatsApp Group. All film suggestions are welcome and encouraged!

Come for the films, stay for the conversation. See you soon!

Summer of Soul takes us back to the summer of 1969, when the Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed over six weeks during the famous Woodstock festival. Although the performances were recorded at the time, the footage remained largely unseen and forgotten for decades. In his debut as a filmmaker, Questlove brings this material together into a documentary that works both as a concert film and as a historical record. The film highlights themes of Black history, culture, fashion, and community during a period marked by social change and political tension. Through powerful performances and reflections, it demonstrates how music created moments of joy, resilience, and healing, and why revisiting these cultural moments remains important today. A speaker will introduce the film to give viewers more insight. This will be our first official event at Melkweg. I hope you can join us for this special event!

The film is in English, with Dutch subtitles.
