Our next discussion is on John M. Keynes' The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money.

Keynes was a leading economist of the 20th century whose work transformed macroeconomic theory and policy. In his most famous work, The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, he provides an economic basis for government intervention to reduce unemployment and mitigate recessions. He engages with his predecessors in a clear manner, so we get a glimpse into their thinking as well.

The goal of the discussion will be to engage with his theory, placing it in the context of his time, with the text as our main reference point — please prepare by reading the following selection of chapters:

  • Book I (Keynes’ response to classical theory)
    Chapter 2
    Chapter 3
  • Book II (Finetuning of definitions)
    Chapter 5: Section II
  • Book III (Consumption)
Chapter 8: Sections I, III, IV
    Chapter 10
  • Book IV (Investment)
Chapters 11: Sections I, III, IV
Chapter 12: Sections I, II, VIII
    Chapter 13

Looking forward to seeing you at the discussion table!
