Newsletter September

Hi all,

So many things happening lately, and a lot of opportunities to learn, work and socialize in the coming months!
We kicked of the Astroplant-project with a short introduction and started with soldering and lasercutting the board for the first kits as well as doing electronics and adding sensors. We’ll take it one step further in October and you’re still very welcome to join, we’re really at the beginning of things! Also drop Manon a note if you want to be added to the Slack-channel where we share ideas and progress!
In relation to the Astroplant project we are organizing 2 specials; one on how to work with the SurfSara backend. We will use the astroplant and other kits, so you can learn how to get your sensordata published in a dashboard. In the other workshop you learn the basics of micropython, see here for more information and how to get your board!

Next to these handson sessions we also have some interesting speakers lined up for you on IoT & Cyberwarfare; Tracking & monitoring seal behavior and Stratumseind, the nightlife area in Eindhoven where a lot of sensors are deployed.
Apart from the above Sensemakers are involved in 2 events that also offer an opportunity to do things together and socialize; the drinkable rivers project and the Sensorthing API hackathon:

Drinkable Rivers
Are you interested in a drinkable Amstel? Would you like to help us with a few hours of your time to do some research? Then join Sensemakers water junkies and make fun with us on the Amstel on Sunday Oct.20th. It is part of the Drinkable Rivers project of Li An Phoa (in cooperation with TU Delft). A project currently expanding to 16 communities in 11 countries: Sensemakers will be the hub for the Amsterdam region.
We already received our measurement gear, and will do our measurements on Sunday Oct.20th so everybody who is interested to help, please let Ted know. Students will analyse the data in a hackathon on Oct.26th.

Hackathon API Sensorthings on 29 and 30 October
On the Sensemakers evening on September 18, Just van den Broeke presented Sensorthings. Sensorthings is a new API standard for sending and retrieving sensor data. A Sensorthings server makes your measurements available via standard API's. With Sensorthings you can tell what you measure, when and where. Because it is an international standard, Sensorthings sensors and applications work independently of where the data is stored. Geonovum (the knowledge organization for geodata standards in the Netherlands) is organizing a hackaton together with the Knowledge Platform APIs. The hackathon starts with a webinar, after which you can apply it. You don't need to be physically present at Geonovum to participate in the hackathon. It is net based. You can follow the webinar through the net and participate in github and gitter. A great opportunity to gain experience with Sensorthings. Because most of us have a job during daytime, Edwin is proposing to meet-up during the evenings of the 29th & 30th, please drop him a note if you want to join!!
More about the hackathon here (in dutch). You can find documentation here

  • New guide on how to run tensorflow lite object-recognition on the raspberry pi4
  • Sensorfact is looking to connect and hire a potential IoT Engineer to work on a Sustainability IoT Application. Feel free to have a look to our Job Listing!
  • We’re very happy with our collaboration with Codam, the famous coding school. Not only are they hosting our meetups, their students are also attending more regularly which adds to having a nice mix of people. Some of them are also very interested in an internship. Here we like to introduce 2 of them:
  1. Software engineer student Igor van der Smissen: I'm a software developer student at Codam in Amsterdam. My main knowledge in programming languages is in C. For my study I'm looking for a internship in data science and/or machine learning for a company that is focused on agriculture. I am available from January 2020. If you have interest in getting to know more about me or you know a company wich would suit my preferences, please contact me on my LinkedIn
  2. Software engineering student Marijn van Heesewijk: I am a student at Codam college. I have practical experience developing in C and I would like to learn more about embedded programming and IoT. I am looking for a 6 month internship at a company that impacts society using IoT technology in a meaningful way. Please contact me at [address removed]
  3. If you would like to offer other studens a possibility, or start a long term collaboration, please contact the placement office at Codam at [address removed]

Events & discounts
We often have free tickets to share as well, but those are raffled off at our events and/or on Slack.

  • Oct. 2nd: DIY Lab Sensemakers, possibility to do your own projects, join the Astroplant project or take a look at how 2 of the sound devices will be realized for deployment in the city.
  • Oct. 2nd: Inflow IoT developer event
Where a group of progressive IoT practitioners and recognised specialists on future trends, relevant technologies and IoT user cases will give the audience all the important, current and future IoT developments from emerging technologies.
The organisers promised us some free tickets, just mail [address removed] that you are from the Sensemakers community and was put through for a free ticket via Manon (he didn’t mention a limit) Don't forget to join our meetup afterwards to share all you've learned😉
  • Oct. 3nd: Sound Safari in the city
This evening you’ll get an update on the newest developments on sensor technology aimed at sound pollution. They will share inspiring examples of bottom-up projects and you will go on a sound safari to collect sound samples around the Waag building.
  • Oct 9th Workshop on how to use the SurfSara backend
  • Drinkable Rivers
See the text above, If you’re interested to do something together, just drop Ted a note!
  • Oct. 29 & 30th Net Based Hackathon API Sensorthings
See the text above, If you’re interested to do something together, just drop Edwin a note!

Hope to see you at one of our events, warm regards,
Gijs, Ted, Manon
