Longform Course: The Flat by Matthijs Meulblok
#### Level: Advanced
*What really happens behind closed doors?*
The Flat is an advanced long-form improv course inspired by Rear Window and the quiet drama of everyday lives lived side by side. Set in a shared apartment building, this format invites you to explore the unseen worlds of neighbours who observe each other from a distance, collide unexpectedly, and slowly reveal who they really are.
Across the course, you and your fellow players will build a living, breathing building filled with recognisable characters and intertwined storylines. Windows become frames. Hallways become crossroads. Small details grow into big consequences. Together, you will create a fully improvised performance of forty minutes or more that feels coherent, cinematic, and emotionally grounded.
Is there romance blossoming across balconies? A secret criminal operation hidden behind tidy curtains? Or simply a lonely man whose strongest relationship is with his cat? The Flat thrives on contrast, tension, and quiet observation, allowing humour and drama to sit side by side. The audience becomes a voyeur, peeking into private lives and watching stories unfold over time.
This course focuses on long-form improvisation as collective storytelling. You will work on sustaining narrative over a longer arc, making bold but consistent character choices, and trusting the ensemble to carry the story together. Editing is treated as a creative tool rather than an interruption, helping scenes flow smoothly and keeping the audience oriented and engaged.
Throughout the course, you will deepen your understanding of longform structure and develop the patience and confidence required to let stories emerge naturally. You will practise playing multiple scenes on stage, supporting parallel storylines, and staying true to your characters as they evolve. The emphasis is on emotional truth, recognisability, and commitment, allowing scenes to resonate long after the laugh has faded.
This is a course for players who enjoy subtlety as much as spectacle, and who want to challenge themselves to create something layered, restrained, and powerful.
#### Who this course is for
This course is intended for experienced improvisers who want to deepen their longform work. You should have completed at least four improv courses or have a solid foundation in character building, story spine, and editing. You are comfortable on stage, curious about narrative structure, and ready to invest in slower, more detailed scene work. This course is not suitable for beginners.
The Flat has previously been directed and taught by Matthijs and performed by groups such as Pure Chocolade at the Impro XL Longform Festival in Hoorn, and Liever Veul Bloemen in Wageningen.
#### About the teacher
Matthijs Meulblok studied Media Studies at Utrecht University and runs his own podcast studio at Wolvenplein, where he records podcasts and voice overs and coaches people in voice acting, podcasting, and media performance.
He has performed with multiple improv groups in different countries, trains a variety of ensembles, and regularly teaches specialised workshops. Since 2025, he has also been exploring stand-up comedy as part of his own performance practice. Matthijs is known for creating thoughtful, thematic lessons and for developing innovative formats in both short-form and long-form improvisation. His teaching combines clarity, creativity, and a strong sense of narrative play.

Swimming lessons for adults | Beginners
If you are living in The Netherlands, by now, you may well have noticed the amount of open water. If you enjoy cycling in the city, you may wish to feel safer as you navigate the bridges and canals. And you may also want to get ready for visiting the beach, pools or the many lakes this summer.
Learning how to swim takes approx 1 year and it all starts with the very first lesson. New comers enroll via our website and pay € 30,50, this is the first lesson and a goody bag. After the class you agree with the personal swim coach how to continue to obtain your final objectives.
Enrolling is only possible via [www.your-personal-swim-coach.nl ](https://www.your-personal-swim-coach.nl/)hence a rvsp via meetup is not enough.
HPC @ SURF
Every 2 months, we'll visit a company or institute that will host the event and provide talks.
This time, we’re visiting **SURF**. You may know SURF as the organization behind the **Snellius supercomputer**, but its role is much broader. SURF is the IT cooperative for education and research in the Netherlands, offering advanced services for computing, storage, networking, and much more.
If you want to get a sense of their work, check out the SURF tag on [Tweakers](https://tweakers.net/tag/SURF/) or visit their website at [surf.nl](https://surf.nl).
The talks are the following:
1. Short intro to Quantum Computing, by David Maier (SURF), 4 minutes
2. FPGAs in HPC, by Mohsen Safari (SURF), 30 minutes
3. Running CUDA on AMD GPUs (without using HIP), by Chris Kitching (Spectral Compute), 30 minutes
For those who visited the previous meetup at Stream HPC, you already know what to expect: deep dives into technical subjects, snacks and drinks, and enough time to socialize.

Designing the System: Design System Practices & Practical Insights
Hi all!
First of all: Happy New Year!! 🍾
We’re super excited to kick off 2026 with our first PuXu meetup of the year! And we are very happy that it will be around a much coveted subject: **The Design System**.
Our event brings together three experts from public service organisations to share practical approaches across key areas around research, design, vision, experimentation, and implementation of design systems.
We're really excited about this one, as we have had many requests from the community to host an event about this topic!
**Speakers:**
**[Anton Olivier](https://www.linkedin.com/in/antonolivier1/) \|** Sr UX Designer **@ [Logius](https://www.logius.nl)**
Anton explores how the Dutch Government interacts with citizens today and how this evolves into a smoother digital experience. In his talk he’ll share lessons from ongoing research, will demonstrate current prototyping, and show off implementation of a government-wide design system, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities in creating a single digital gateway for citizens.
Anton is a UX Strategist at [Logius](https://www.logius.nl), a subsidiary of the Dutch ministry of internal affairs, where he is responsible for the UX side of government notification, messaging and personal data available at MijnOverheid.
**[Jeffrey Lauwers](https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffreylauwers/)** \| Sr\. Designer @ [NLDS](https://www.nldesignsystem.nl) from [Valsplat](https://valsplat.nl)
Jeffrey has a strong passion for design systems, accessibility, and Ajax. He is currently part of the core team behind NL Design System.
In this talk, Jeffrey shares his experience with design systems, focusing on the NL Design System. He explains what the system is, how it works, and how designers can contribute at different levels.
The talk explores the design side of NL Design System, including design tokens, components, patterns, templates, and tools like Figma, illustrated with practical examples. Additionally, Jeffrey highlights the importance of community, accessibility, research, and sharing knowledge across teams
**[Joshua Grootveld ](https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshua-grootveld/)**\| UX Design Engineer @ [KVK](https://www.kvk.nl)
I am a Designer with a curious mind and a big heart for people. I love bringing structure to creative chaos and I guide individuals and teams toward clarity through structure, empathy, and collaboration.
When I’m not wrangling figma components or explaining why card variants are a philosophical debate, I’m probably grinding korean on duolingo, building my own flashcard app, or building APIs that screenshot things for reasons that made sense at the time.
The talk: Design Systems, maintenance and AI-integration
5 years into working on design systems, I’ve realized something uncomfortable: the way we build systems is killing the human thinking we need most.
AI is eating both discovery and delivery work at a quick pace… But instead of panicking, what if we used this moment to refocus on what humans are actually good at?
This talk is about design systems in 2026, product/UX collaboration when robots do the grunt work, and why experimentation beats fear every single time. I’ll share what I’ve learned so far and hopefully inspire you to start experimenting yourself.
**What to expect:**
🌟 **Inspiring Speakers:** Hear from inspiring speakers as they share real-world insights on **Design Systems** (More details to follow!);

The Web Sustainability Guidelines
Happy New Year, Green Software Practitioners! Green Software Brighton are back for our first event of 2026 with an excellent talk from Alexander Dawson all about the Web Sustainability Guidelines.
Do you work in Web?
Are you concerned about how to minimise the environmental impacts of the sites you create?
Do you wish there were guidelines so you don't have to start from scratch?
Then this talk is for you! Alex has been integral to creating these guidelines within the W3C, the body which has produced similar standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) which are now internationally recognised.
The guidelines are broken down into different areas covering UX, web development, hosting & infrastructure and strategy & product management, so they cover many roles in the website creation lifecycle.
Check out the Green Software Brighton [website](https://greensoftwarebrighton.co.uk/) for links to previous talks.
Arrive from 18:00 for pizza and drinks. Event will start at 18:30. We always head for a drink and a chat locally afterwards too.

HTML5 Master Series (Class 04 of 04) (SPECIAL OFFERING)
**PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT NOTES:**
1. The dates listed for this series are about 95% reliable. We are completing our 2026 schedule as we speak, so minor adjustments are still occurring.
2. Each class in this series has an attendance fee, though this first offering is free on a first-come, first-served basis.
3. Each class, from BOTH a sign-up and fee perspective, is a separate entity.
**Introduction:**
HTML5 is the foundational technology for modern web development, serving as the standard markup language for structuring and presenting content on the World Wide Web. Developed through a collaboration between the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG), HTML5 provides a robust system of elements (tags) that tell a browser how to display text, images, and multimedia in a clear and meaningful way. It works in concert with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for presentation and JavaScript for interactivity, forming the core technology stack for virtually all websites and many web applications today.
One of the significant advancements of HTML5 is the introduction of powerful new features and elements designed to improve functionality and simplify development. Key additions include native multimedia support via the \ and \ tags, allowing developers to embed media without third-party plugins. It also offers new form controls for better user input, such as date and email types, and introduces web storage capabilities to store data offline for enhanced performance. These features streamline the process of building rich, interactive web experiences.
A significant focus of HTML5 is enhanced semantics and better structural organization of content. New semantic elements like , , , , and \ provide meaningful structure to documents, which aids in search engine optimization (SEO) and improves accessibility for assistive technologies. These elements define different parts of a webpage (e.g., a header for the top, a nav for navigation links, a footer for the bottom), making the code more readable and understandable for both developers and machines. This emphasis on clear structure helps in creating more logical and maintainable websites.
Developing websites in today's competitive environment requires taking advantage of every technique you can to get the maximum exposure possible. Our HTML5 class will not only show you what's new in the HTML specification, but also the best way to develop optimized web pages that get the attention your client and/or company requires.
**The breakdown of the four-class series is as follows:**
**Class 1: Introduction to Web Structure and Basic HTML5**
