Join this gentle, informative foraging walk through Park Frankendael and discover how urban nature can support your health, diet, and connection to the land.
On this walk, you’ll learn how to:- Recognise edible and medicinal plants growing locally this season
- Harvest wild plants safely, ethically, and sustainably
- Avoid common poisonous lookalikes
- Use wild plants for food, simple remedies, and everyday wellbeing
Along the way, you’ll enjoy a cup of freshly brewed herbal tea made from wild plants, and you’ll receive a handout to help you remember what you’ve learned and continue exploring on your own.
This walk is suitable for beginners to experienced, and the naturally curious — no prior knowledge needed.***
Practical Details
Start & End Point: Bike racks near Huize Frankendael / Restaurant Merkelbach
Terrain & Pace: Easy, relaxed walking on natural paths (woodchip, soil, grass, woodland edges, water edges, and the foraging gardens)
Weather: The walk goes ahead in all weather except storms
What to Bring: A small paper or cotton bag if you’d like to gather a few herbs or seeds. It is peak foraging season at this time, so plenty to take home and cook.
Facilities: Public toilets available in the park
Language: The walk is in English (Dutch also spoken)***
Your Guide
Your walk is led by Lynn Shore, a medical herbalist and urban foraging educator with over 15 years’ experience helping people rediscover the edible landscape around them. Lynn runs Amsterdam’s city foraging garden and works with community groups, environmental organisations, chefs, and eco-restaurants.
She combines practical plant knowledge with a public-health perspective on food, wellbeing, and urban nature. In 2025, she took part in the WildBiome project, living on wild local foods for a month to explore their effects on the body — insights that inform her teaching today. She plans to do this again in September 2026.
Lynn is also the author of The Green City Witch.***

Autumn Equinox Gathering - For Druids, Witches and Friends
Restaurant Merkelbach, Middenweg 72, 1097 BS, Amsterdam, NLGather together to peacefully celebrate the Autumn Equinox. The time of balance when we begin to slowly turn inward and nature starts to slow down.
Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Bring a lantern, torch or candle and something to sit on. Hopefully it won't rain, but dress for the weather. Please bring your own food and drink.
This is a free event.Starting at the entrance closest to Huize Frankendael / Restaurant Merkelbach. There are 6 entrances to this park to check it first :)
There will be a simple ritual during the gathering, to celebrate nature at the Autumn Equinox, and to promote peace and safety throughout the world.
NB: This is an outdoor gathering - the closest toilet facilities are on the Middenweg at local bars (about 5 minutes walk away).

Urban Herbology Apprenticeship — Hawthorn Group
Volkstuin Complex Rust en Vreugd, Paterslaan 10, Amsterdam, NLThe Urban Herbology Apprenticeship is a small, hands-on learning group for people who want to develop a deeper relationship with plants and nature in and around Amsterdam.
The Hawthorn group begins in September 2026, with ten Sunday workshops spread across the year. There are a maximum of six apprentices in the group, allowing us to learn together as a small community and really get to know the plants, places and seasonal changes around us.
This is not a series of ordinary foraging workshops. The year gives us time to build knowledge and practical skills gradually, returning to places and plants as the seasons change.What we'll do.
across the ten workshops we will:- Work closely with local plants and their seasonal cycles
- Explore Amsterdam's wild and cultivated places
- Learn to recognise and respectfully interact with useful plants
- Make useful herbal preparations, foods and other plant-based creations
- Explore local habitats and observe how they change through the year
- Forage and learn practical skills
- Share food, stories, observations and ideas
- Develop a deeper sense of connection with the natural world around us
Between workshops, apprentices also have access to the Urban Herbology Library, with online lessons, recipes, plant information and practical resources to explore whenever you want to go deeper.
The emphasis, though, is on learning together in person. You don't need to arrive already knowing lots about plants. Curiosity, attentiveness and a willingness to learn are much more important.Hawthorn Workshop Dates

The workshops take place in Schellingwoude (Amsterdam Noord) and the Watergraafsmeer (Amsterdam Oost) with locations chosen according to what we are learning and the season.Who is it for?
The apprenticeship is for anyone who feels drawn to learning more about the plants and nature around them — anyone interested in living more sustainably in the city, whether you're already an enthusiastic forager and herb crafter or are just beginning to look more closely at the green world of the city.
You might have a garden, allotment or balcony, or simply walk through Amsterdam's parks and streets wondering what is growing there.You don't need any previous herbalism or foraging experience.
What matters most is curiosity and a desire to spend a year learning, making, exploring and paying attention.Places are limited
There are only six places in the Hawthorn group.
This is a full-year apprenticeship with Lynn Shore rather than a single Meetup event, so please read the full course information and check that the workshop dates should work for you before registering.
