That's because Drupal development (themeing inclusive) is not easy. Not because of the platform being difficult to develop for (it's PHP based after all) but because it is so powerful. The same pros and cons of PHP can be said of Drupal, esp. the "there are so many ways to skin a cat that you get stuck trying to choose just one sometimes" part. The great thing is, though, the community is there for you...although sometimes it feels like a survivor's meeting more than anything else ;)

But as Tony said, WP has as many large sites built in it as does Drupal these days. Which platform you decide on depends mainly on the (human programming) assets at your disposal.
