I think that there's a much greater conversation here and that's the blurring of private and public because of the technology we have now. Years ago, this would've been pretty much between Ravi and the sender. Ravi might've told a few folks, but it would've stayed within a small circle of people at best. And even then, it might have turned into a "he said, she said" battle, since it would've been likely that the rant was delivered in person or maybe on voicemail and it wouldn't really have been possible to share it. (Except in rare cases like the "Fuck you and the Little Mermaid too" voicemail at Columbia years ago.)

But today, you can instantly share something like this with thousands of people right away. Look at what happened with @theconner and the lost gig at Cisco. They may have thought they were sending a private message to a select group of friends, but today's communication world is a lot more connected then that.

Now, what was said was pretty out there, especially given that it was a pretty simple fix. My guess is that the person who sent that note was pissed off about something else and, while reading this thread today, feels pretty stupid about what they did. That's my hope, anyway. If this is truly how they feel, then getting bounced from the presentation should be the least of their worries. If they're presenting a new company & looking for funding, you can be dammned sure an e-mail like that will come back and bite them in the ass.

And I'm not sure what to tell you to do. But, if you don't go public, you can be damned sure that the presenters who didn't send you that note will start their presentation by saying "It wasn't me!"

If this were a public remark to the list, I'd agree that 'sanctions'
are in place.
But i don't think its entirely fair to hold a member of a 'group'
accountable for what they do on their own time.
Is the instigator an abhorrent person? An asshole? A mindless fuck?
Shit scum and everything in between?
Absolutely.
But they made those remarks in private, not to a group. So this
should really be handled in private.
So while I don't think that this person should be 'outed' etc on
list, I'd love to get an off-list message from Ravi naming who I
should avoid ever doing business with.
