Actually, it's kind of a pointless question. Whatever you think their "method" is doesn't change the facts. They produce a horrible mobile product and there's too much competition for them to maintain any signficant market share. In markets where there's competition, Microsoft doesn't do well.
Microsoft doesn't have a single theme to their success, other than they got to be very large on a couple of products and they got to dump lots of money into other endeavours, most of which have not been very successful.

Is there some focused discussion or assertion that you want to make? I made one a few weeks ago and simply followed up with an article from a well respected magazine to support my claim.
And yes, Microsoft makes lots of money and they can support winmo development for years. The Zune, for example, is surviving on 2% market share and msft's deep pockets.
