Dear Lakis,

The contacts I am sending you have worked with us on the timber frame/ straw bale house we are currently building at Camp Epworth in High Falls, NY. They have taught classes with us in the summer of 2007 and given my husband Wilton, who is an architect and designer of the house, essential advice and consultation over the years from conception to the current stage of construction of this community project.

Ben Simpson designs and builds straw bale buildings and has taught many classes in the Ulster County area and elsewhere. He taught our straw bale class, has designed and is currently constructing a load-bearing strawbale house nearby in Kerhonkson. [[masked]]

Jim Luckner is a Structural Engineer who has worked with and taught with most of the folks here and is experienced with natural building and the related building codes and other local laws that come into play in preparation for construction. He co-taught our Stone Foundation and Straw Bale courses.[[masked]]

Ethan Zickler is a Permaculture Designer and teacher with an extensive practice in landscape design and stone work. He built his own timber frame house. Ethan taught our Stone Foundation Course and co-taught our Timber Frame course. [[masked]], assisting both Aaron and Charles [below] to complete work in time for the scheduled house raising.

Aaron Dennis teaches Timber Framing, designs and builds timber frames in many parts of New York State. Aaron taught our Timber Frame course, and led up a team of timber framers, students and volunteers from the beginning of cutting the frame to the final House Raising. He is located in Ithaca. [[masked]]

Charles Blend is a Timber Framer who came at the request of Aaron Dennis to assist us during a critical stage of building the timber frame in between classes. Charlie brought together our team of novices and volunteers, together with Ethan, offering his expertise and experience. He remained and worked with Aaron during preparation for the raising and the raising itself. Charlie does work on projects in many parts of the country. [[masked]]

Kay Cafasso is a teacher of Permaculture Design and Natural Building with a special interest in plasters. She has taught permaculture design courses and will be co-teaching in the upcoming permaculture teacher training course at Camp Epworth. Kay has worked on numerous natural building projects and will be partnering with us through the process of building a cob wall and plastering the house in the Spring and early Summer. [[masked]]

Ian Hayes has been mentored by and worked on projects with Ben, Jim and Ethan over many years. He is familiar with many aspects of natural building and was an assistant teacher in the Stone Foundation and Strawbale classes. Ian designed and led a team to build the beautiful stone foundation wall on the house. He also helped us complete additional bale work after the straw bale course and prepare the house for winter. Lakis, I hope this information is helpful to you and perhaps other people. We can be reached by e-mail [above] or phone if you would like to speak with us directly. [[masked]]

Peace,

Hi everyone,

I'm writing to get some advice. As part of our quest to move upstate, we're now looking at the option of buying vacant land and building, and I was wondering if anyone could suggest some permaculture/natural builders who work in New York State that I could talk to. The main questions I would have would be about logistics, timing, cost and general feasibility.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?

Thanks,

Lakis
