Welcome to the most popular hiking group in the Bay Area. We like meeting new people and respect the environment at all times. Bay Area Hiking and beyond.
Interested in spending more time on the weekends in nature? Want to explore more of the Bay Area? Are you an afternoon person? Like to walk at a moderate pace? This may be the group for you! This Meetup is great for beginner or intermediate hikers. We will host a hike most Saturdays and Sundays. The hikes will average about five miles -- some shorter; some longer. Most hikes will be in the Bay Area within 90 minutes of Palo Alto in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Monterey and Marin counties, although some will be farther away, e.g., Yosemite and Lake Tahoe.

SUMMARY:
Hike to a beautiful and rare waterfall (tidefall), plummeting 40ft until it reaches the ocean. Enjoy stunning views of the Pacific combined with varying terrain through forests, tall brush, and exposed dirt trails.
The hike to Alamere falls is ~8.4 mile out-and-back. Start at the Palomarin Trailhead located in the parking lot near the restrooms. For the first couple of miles, the trail is fairly exposed and can get warm on sunny days. The second half of the hike prior to reaching the coast is covered and wooded.
(source: https://www.theoutbound.com/san-francisco/hiking/hike-to-alamere-falls (https://www.theoutbound.com/san-francisco/hiking/hike-to-alamere-falls)))
On the way to the falls, there are two lakes - Bass Lake and Pelican Lake.
At the end of the trail, there is a little scrambling involved to get down to the beach, from where you can see and get below the waterfall. If you are unsure of the scramble, then you can enjoy the beach (and a different, smaller waterfall) from the top of the waterfall. We will spend about 45 minutes - 1 hour at the beach, to enjoy both the beach and the waterfall.
HIKING DIRECTIONS:
From the Trailhead, get on to the Coast Trail ( 3 miles) -->
There's a small unmarked trail (0.1 miles) to Bass Lake -->
Get back on Coast Trail (1 mile) ; you will see Pelican Lake on the left along the way. Once you get past Pelican Lake, keep an eye out for the trail to Alamere Falls on the left, since it's unmarked and easy to miss -->
Top of the Alamere Falls -->
Scramble down the rocks to the beach (or optionally, stay at the top) -->
Scramble back up the rocks -->
Walk back along the Coast Trail (4 miles)
BREAKS: We will break for lunch at the Bass Lake or at the beach depending on how much time everybody wants to spend at the lake. The plan is to spend about an hour at the beach. We will also take breaks as needed
WHAT TO BRING:
- Hat/sun protection
- Snacks, lunch, fruit, water etc.
- Swimwear and change of clothes if you want to swim in the ocean
HIKING WAIVER: Please sign the hiking waiver form located at - https://www.sleeplateandhike.com/waiver-signing-form/

HIGHLIGHTS
Alum Rock Park is one of California’s oldest municipal parks. Located within the Alum Rock Canyon in the foothills of the Diablo Mountain Range, the park’s 740 acres of natural, rugged, beauty provide visitors with many leisure outdoor activities including, hiking, jogging, bicycling and picnicking. Due to it’s proximity to rural, natural lands, the park is home to many wild animals. Those animals include mountain lions, bobcats, deer and a number of other smaller animals.
Special features of the park include Penitencia Creek which transects the entire park, the Mineral Springs area that contains active mineral springs and grottos, the Gazebo and the Log Cabin which was constructed in 1913. Nine reservable group picnic areas provide barbecue pits, picnic tables and nearby restrooms for groups ranging in size from 30 to 300.
TRAIL HIKING DIRECTIONS
Take a left North Rim Trail up to Todd Quick Trail turning right onto Bocarrdo Trail to make a counter-clockwise loop. After 1.6 miles take the 0.25 mile trail to the summit.
