** NEW! SHOP CHC GEAR!!! **
Come ride our bus to day-hike adventures at the region's many beautiful outdoor destinations! Experience the trails 52 weeks a year with Capital Hiking Club, a non-profit group that's been operating since 1937, welcoming the public to join us on all hikes. We specialize in hiking options that challenge a range of skill levels and fulfill the varied interests of our hikers. Saturday weekly hikes: Long hikes averaging 9-12 miles and shorter hikes averaging 6-9 miles, plus social time with post-hike refreshments. The Club's chartered bus starts picking up hikers near 17th and K Streets (Farragut Square) in downtown DC and makes more pick-up stops in either VA or MD (depending on the destination) for most Saturday hikes. Occasional trailhead or carpool hikes are offered. We also lead moonlight hikes on the C&O Canal Towpath as well as full-moon hikes downtown.

This bucolic state park on the Blue Ridge features sweeping vistas, rolling meadows, and extensive forest. We’ll begin at the Visitors Center with a warmup ramble through the lower meadows and woodlands on the James Ball, Corporal Morgan, and Hadow Trails, with a side loop on the Snowden Trail, before starting our ascent on the South Ridge Trail. A stretch on the North Ridge Trail connects us to the Appalachian Trail. Moderate hikers remain on the AT, while long hikers add distance and elevation with a side trip on the Old AT. The two routes rejoin at the Ambassador Whitehouse Trail to cross the upper meadow with its extensive views of the Piedmont region. - Hike: Third and Fourth Mtns., Massanutten Mtns., VA17th Street Northwest & K Street Northwest, Washington, DC36,00 USD
PATC Map H / VA Bus
$36. Long hike: 9½ mi, 2600 ft. elevation gain. Moderate hike: 8½ mi, 2400 ft. elevation gain. Shorter hike option available.
This hike takes us to one of our relatively rare trips to the southern half of the Massanuttens today. Starting in the Shenandoah Valley on the west side of the range, we trek south from Fridley Gap on the Massanutten South Trail to a spectacular overlook. After taking in its view, those desiring a shorter option retrace their steps. All other hikers continue on the Massanutten South Trail, turn north on a fire road to the Fridley Gap Trail, and then left to follow the trail over the ridge of Third Mtn. Long hikers go further on an unmarked side trail along a babbling mountain run.

Few sights in nature rival the thrill of watching an eagle soar. Hopefully we’ll get several of those thrills today as we visit a scenic Maryland state park renowned as one of the prime eagle nesting areas on the East Coast. Starting from Shures Landing, we’ll pass the prime area for eagles and other raptors such as ospreys and falcons as we hike downstream (south) on the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenways Trail. Then we’ll do a loop on the Deer Creek Trail before proceeding south on the Susquehanna Ridge Trail. Moderate hike proceeds to the Rock Run Mill; long hikers add a loop including another segment of the Susquehanna Ridge Trail. All return along the river back to Shures Landing.
