Exhibition: Am I An American or Am I Not?
Exhibition: Am I An American or Am I Not?
Visit the library to view our latest special exhibition! The exhibition’s title comes from [Fred Korematsu](https://menlopark.bibliocommons.com/v2/search?query=fred%20korematsu&searchType=subject), who famously challenged the mass imprisonment of over 125,000 Japanese Americans during WWII. When faced with criminal charges for not following the military orders to leave his home without due process, the U.S. born citizen remembered his Constitutional rights and asked, “Am I an American or am I not?” “Am I An American or Am I Not?” explores how fear, discrimination, and government actions led to the violation of Constitutional rights during the war and how this history relates to the experiences of other communities, including Native Americans and African Americans. The exhibition addresses stories of other historic and modern-day events that parallel aspects of the incarceration of Japanese Americans to encourage visitors to take action today and stand up for the rights of all Americans. “Am I An American or Am I Not?” was developed in partnership with the Fred T. Korematsu Institute, AGH Arts Strategies, and Exhibit Envoy, with funding from the National Park Service Japanese American Confinement Sites Grant Program, Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), the JA Community Foundation, and PwC. **The exhibition is viewable during all library open hours (M-W Noon-8 p.m.; Th-Sun. 10 a.m.-6 p.m.).** This exhibition received funding support from the [Friends of the Menlo Park Library](https://friendsmpl.org/). **ONE BOOK, ONE COAST:** Throughout the months of April and May, Menlo Park is partnering with LA County library and nearly 200 library systems across California, Washington, and Oregon for [One Book, One Coast](https://lacountylibrary.org/one-book-one-coast/), a shared community reading program that celebrates literacy, learning, community, and civil discourse. 2nd Friday Women's Poetry Night: Bring Poetry to Share and Discuss
2nd Friday Women's Poetry Night: Bring Poetry to Share and Discuss
***All Poetry & All Women are Welcomed!*** ***QUICK LOOK:*** Join us for an enchanting evening of poetry as we celebrate the power of words and the beauty of voices. The Multicultural Women's Poetry Group is excited to host this event, where we join to share extraordinary creations from our favorite poets and our own poetic creations. From thought-provoking pieces or heart-warming verses, this evening promises to be a captivating journey into the world of poetry. Whether you identify as a poet, an aspiring writer, love the poetry you read, or simply love the spoken word, our 2nd Friday Poetry Night offers an open and inclusive space for all to express themselves. We encourage attendees to participate by reading from their own poetry or reciting works by their favorite poets. This is an incredible opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, immerse yourself in the world of poetry, and support the immense talent within our community. Join us as we uplift and empower one another through the universal language of poetry. ***IT'S IN THE DETAILS*** ***What to bring:*** BRING any poetry you would like to share aloud. This month, we have a suggested theme, which is just an invitation and not a requirement; any poetry may be shared. You are free to bring your own non-alcoholic beverage or snack. The group voted not to provide these items, but each could bring their own. ***Inspiration:*** We will post poetry writing prompts for the month that may inspire your first poem or your billionth poem. Poetry that is funny, based on true stories, word play, emotional, dim or bright, rhyming or not, long or short…. Give it a go. ***Our Theme this month:*** [NaPoWriMo; National Poetry Writing Month, 2026](https://www.napowrimo.net/) 30 poems in 30 days... ***What we will do:*** Each person who wishes can share their selection and any thoughts about their pieces, such as why they like them or what inspired them. Then, we will open it up for supportive discussion from the “I” & “and” perspectives. Each person can share, and we would like to respect the time in order to give everyone who wishes a chance to speak. **What to share in the discussion:** Anything you feel comfortable sharing. These could be the feelings, meanings, or questions that arise for you. It could be the reason why you resonate with a piece, including a personal experience or memory. Also, you may have insights into the writing, such as the historical context of its composition, the author, or other interesting details. The goal is to have an engaging, supportive discussion. This is not a critique environment. All discussions are intended to explore how the art shared during the event makes us feel and to provide support and encouragement to all of our authors who wish to breathe life into the words they have shared as a gift to our ears.

Peninsulaires Chorus Rehearsal - Guests Welcome!
Peninsulaires Chorus Rehearsal - Guests Welcome!
Chorus rehearsals are open to guests! Whether you're just curious about barbershop, or a seasoned veteran, we'd love to have you come sing with us! Please take note of our [COVID-19 Protocol](https://thepeninsulaires.com/covid19/), which no longer requires proof of vaccination. **What to Expect at Your First Rehearsal** The rehearsal begins at 7:30, but we encourage you to show up about 15 minutes earlier, which will give you a chance to sign in and get prepared to actively participate in the rehearsal, if you choose to do so. Our doors actually open at 6:30, and you’re welcome to come in any time after that. If you’d like to connect before the rehearsal, maybe to tell us about yourself or ask questions, feel free to join this Meetup group, where you can RSVP or send us a message (or you can just show up). When you arrive, head over to the guest table, and a member of our Guest Welcome team will get you signed in and provide you with a name badge and one of our guest song books that you can use for the evening. We’ll place you in one of the 4 voice-part sections: bass, baritone, lead, or tenor, based on your vocal range and experience. We’ll also get you paired with a “buddy” in your section, who will guide you and answer any questions you may have. Showing up early will give you a chance to socialize with chorus members and our director, and maybe experience Barbershop harmony by singing a tag (a few measures from the end of a song that can be learned quickly without music, and produce beautiful ringing chords). The rehearsal begins at 7:30 with a 25-to-30-minute warmup, aimed at preparing your voice for singing, helping the entire group blend voices to produce a full rich sound, and working on important vocal techniques that we apply throughout the rehearsal. Once we’re warmed up, we go through the core rehearsal, learning new tunes, practicing and perfecting songs we already know, or preparing for an upcoming show or contest. We also spend time working on quartet singing, which really helps individuals perfect their singing skills and mastery of harmony. We mix in a few announcements that are relevant to the chorus, sing Happy Birthday to members celebrating birthdays that week, and take a break, during which we socialize, have snacks and sing tags. The rehearsal finishes at 10:00.

Haleh Pastry & Cafe
Haleh Pastry & Cafe
Let's meet up at Haleh Pastry & Cafe. We can enjoy some coffee or tea, sweets and great conversation! It is a VERY cute place to hang out, and be merry 😃 It is a family owned small business. I have reserved the backyard area and patio that is big and can sit up to 50 (if more than 50 attend, some will have to stand). The back patio is covered, and there is a large tent in the back, plus some places to soak up the sun, depending on your preference. Don't let the front of the store fool you, as once you walk in, it is very cute and a great place to meet new friends. ☀️ ☕ 🫖 There are a few parking spots in front, but plenty on the street and side street. Don't worry about being on time. Just come when you can, as we will be there until noon. 💗 If this is your first time attending our events, just look for the group of ladies. Many of us, including myself, will be on the lookout for new faces. I look forward to seeing everyone (regulars plus we welcome first event ladies), and we all enjoy great conversations where we drink coffee or tea, meet new friends and be merry!
