Hartford Area Hiking™

Training hike

We will hike the Macedonia Ridge Trail ascending to the peaks of 3 modest mountains; Cobble Mountain, South Cobble and Pine Hill, with many scenic views to enjoy. We will then extend the distance and complete the park loop. The plan makes this distance about 7.5 miles and should take between 3-4 hours. This is a challenging hike with several hundred feet of elevation gain and some parts of the trail are steep and lots of rocks.
It will be muddy and wet in areas.

After you leave Kent and head past the Kent School, there is NO CELL service. Please download your Google map before you leave home. I also will be able to receive or send messages. There are park signs that will get you into the park. Just follow them. We are going to park in the first picnic area on the left. There is a bathroom (well, an outhouse).

Hiking boots, water, trail snacks, seasonal clothing required. Hiking poles are a big help. The foliage is not out yet so use sunscreen. There will be little shade. Park in the first parking area after park entrance near Macedonia ridge trail head (blue blaze ).

It is a long drive so PLEASE give yourself plenty of time. Arrive early enough to get ready. Check out the distance before the morning of.

Please do not double book your day. The group will not adjust their speed to accommodate another event for you. Posted end times are not firm.

Please have hiking experience to attend this event. We hike as a group so be sure this is your ability. If I do not know you, I will check out your other group memberships. Hiding your groups? You may get a message from me.
Let's head to Sleeping Giant for a more aggressive path up the blue trail and up the giant's head. This a fun rock climb. I then plan to head out on blue and white to the back of the park for more scrambles. It will be a long loop. In the past this ended up 7 miles and 1600 in elevation. We will summit the tower from that area. Finish times are never definite.

Please meet at the main entrance parking area on Mt. Carmel Ave. The last time there there are port o potties near that lot and a trailers for bathrooms on our way to the trail.

Dogs need to be on leashes and be able to climb the rocky face. No Children. You must assess your ability to keep a 2 mile per hour pace.

Please plan on bringing a pack and carry lots of water, snacks, camera. Wear hiking boots. Hiking poles are great but not required.
Layered synthetic clothing is required. NO sneakers, NO jeans or other cotton clothing.

New Hampshire Training hike.
This is Mother's Day weekend.

We are hiking up the 3,491-ft. Mt. Greylock, the tallest peak in Massachusetts. The path we'll hike will be a looping hike of about 8 miles in length and with a roughly 2,248 ft. altitude gain. We will be starting in Greylock Glen on the east side of the mountain, following the Bellows Pipe Trail and connect to the Appalachian Trail (AT) to the peak. We will lunch and take in the views at the peak. From the peak, we head south on the AT, then take Gould trail back to Greylock Glen. Greylock Glen will have bathroom facilities and there are bathroom facilities at the peak too.
Hopefully the visitors center on the summit will be open. Bring money for ice cream and more.

Hiking boots required. Hiking poles are advised. Please bring a pack and bring plenty of water with electrolytes and food containing protein and carbohydrates, sunscreen, bug spray. You must eat. The summit may be windy and cooler so bring something warm to wear for the lunch break.

We will hike at a moderate pace with breaks when folks need them. The trail will be steep. No children. If you want to bring your dog you must contact me directly.
Everyone will start on the waitlist. I will move over folks I have hiked with and have made the New Hampshire a summer goal.

Directions: I want to start at the parking area further on Gould Road. If you drive up the hill, there is a parking area on the right. Go past that and around the corner. There is a pull off and a bathroom on the right. There will be another parking area at a gate on the right. That's the start.
