Depuis la révolution de 1959, l’île est gouvernée par une dictature communiste. Pendant des décennies, Cuba a survécu grâce au soutien économique de puissances alliées, d’abord l’Union soviétique, puis le Venezuela, l'Iran, la Chine. Aujourd’hui, l’économie cubaine traverse une crise profonde : pénuries alimentaires, coupures d’électricité, inflation, migration massive et dépendance énergétique. La fin du soutien pétrolier vénézuélien ont accentué une situation déjà dramatique. Dans le débat public occidental, Cuba est souvent présentée à travers des récits simplifiés : – soit comme un symbole romantique de résistance révolutionnaire – soit comme un exemple caricatural d’échec politique Notre objectif n’est pas de répéter ces récits. **BIFF : Nirvanna - The Band - the Show - the Movie** 11/04 @ 19h30 If you’re a fan of the 2008 mockumentary web sitcom Nirvana the Band the Show, or its 2017 spiritual successor, Viceland’s Nirvanna the Band the Show — both about a couple of guys who just want to play a show at Toronto’s Rivoli — then prepare to fall in love with 2025’s big-screen version, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. If you’re not at all familiar with the originals, but you know and/or love Back to the Future, that should be enough to guarantee you a good time at this almost-lawsuit-worthy homage/parody to the 1980s time travel classic. And if perchance you already love both Nirvanna and BTTF, then strap in, because when this movie hits 88 kilometres an hour… Like its small- and computer-screen predecessors, the film version stars its co-creators, Matt Johnson (also directing) and Jay McCarrol, playing fictionalized versions of themselves. Like their younger, spryer selves, all they want is to play at the Rivoli. (Thank heavens the century-old establishment exists in all three time periods.) They think they have a plan — OK, Matt thinks they have a plan; Jay has always played the cynical straight man — to gain notoriety (and a gig) by skydiving off the CN Tower and into the Rogers Centre. And, like every other one of their harebrained schemes, it almost works. Matt’s next great idea is to trick out their RV like the DeLorean from that other movie, with the time circuits built into the vehicle’s fridge. (Fun fact: Back to the Future’s original screenplay imagined a fridge rather than a car as the device for travelling through time.) He’ll trick the Rivoli’s management into letting them play there to save the spacetime continuum. Or something. Welcome to our weekly event in the upstairs room of The Sister Café, rue Chair et Pain 3, one block from the Grand Place. Please get there early enough to order your drink at the bar first. Thank you! After introductions we will collect questions from the group participants, choose one by voting then discuss it for an hour. Then most of us stay for drinks and bizarre conversations. Past questions have been wide and not confined to academic philosophy: What is a genuine friend? Is social media turning us into emotional zombies? Do we lose some of the experience of things by defining them? Are we driven by sex? Is loneliness a personal failure? Is morality relative? **Crucially, be kind and respectful and generous** in your disagreements; remember how much you personally enjoy someone else proving you wrong before celebrating your cutting counterexamples.

The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be. Private Group. Closed to the Public Knowing ourselves and understanding our abilities is the first step toward wielding our gifts with control and accuracy. In subsequent classes we will verify and hone our talents with activities and discussion. These are hands-on workshops and participation is expected. The goal of our series will be to develop expertise in areas of particular interest such as mediumship, channeling, divination, healing and, etc..
