**--=>+ Meeting Spot +<=--**
Outside the clothing store Black Orange. It is inside Lygon Court next to Brunettis. Join the group at the meeting spot 10 minutes before the start time or see us in the movie.
**--=>+ The Film +<=--**
Based on a true story and a memoir of the same name, H IS FOR HAWK is a soaring journey of the connection between people and nature, starring a knockout Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson.
When Helen's (Foy) beloved father passes away, they begin to lose themselves in memories of their time birding and exploring the natural world together. Becoming obsessed with the idea of training their own goshawk, Helen brings a fearsome bird known as Mabel home to Cambridge, where they lecture. But as they labour to teach Mabel how to hunt and fly free on their own, Helen uncovers how neglected their own emotions and life have become.
**--=>+ Tickets +<=--**
Everyone will need to buy their own ticket online and in advance. If you want to sit with other group members, there's a tendency for us to pick seats in the back two rows. Those who feel comfortable can catch up in Nova's bar afterward.
**--=>+ Afterwards+<=--**
We meet in Nova's bar after the movie. Look for us in the area to the left as you go down the steps. Share your thoughts about the film with the group over a drink of your choice.
If the bar is closed we typically head across the road to the Wolf's Lair which is out the back of Jimmy Watson's.

Volleyball Training and Games - Intermediate - B Level (PVGC)
Welcome to Melbourne Volleyball Academy! 🤗
**[[WHAT]]**
This session will be broken into 2 halves, 1st half is training and the 2nd half is games. Please arrive on time as we will start exactly at 6:30 PM.
Our intention is to have this training be the 'next step' after our beginner-level training at North Melbourne Community Centre.
We will be focusing on learning what specific roles on the court entail, improving 'volleyball IQ', breaking bad habits, and building better techniques.
**[[WHERE]]**
The session will be held as Pascoe Vale Girls College.
Please enter via Cornwall Road through the back gates as other entrances onto the campus will be closed
**[[WHO]]**
The training is intended for social volleyball players at the intermediate level or 'B' level (for more details on volleyball levels, please visit our site here: https://melbournevolleyballacademy.com.au/skill-levels-explained).
Players are expected to:
* have strong fundamentals
* pass freeballs and serve receive consistently
* understand 4-2 system (pass middle rotation)
* have some knowledge of 5-1 (1 setter all around) or 6-2 (back row setter only) systems
* understand 'base defense'
* help others and have good sportsmanship
If you are a high intermediate (BB) or advanced player (A) you are more than welcome to join but you may find our open play sessions for BB/A level players more suitable.
For players that are at the beginner level, we suggest attending our training on Fridays at North Melbourne Community Centre 6-9PM as beginners may find the drills and level of play too difficult.
Players will be asked to attend a different session if their play is deemed unsafe or if they are not of the appropriate skill level.
**[[HOW MUCH]]**
$21 card payment will be collected on the day via square (EFTPOS) payment.
**[[WHEN]]**
The stadium is booked for 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM. However, feel free to come early and stretch as the stadium is open earlier.
**Last-minute dropouts and no-shows will have a zero-tolerance policy going forward.**
All players are expected to **update their RSVP at least 24 hours** in advance if they are unable to attend. This applies to players on the going list and the waitlist.
**[[THINGS TO BRING]]**
We ask that you bring:
* Water bottle
* Appropriate footwear for indoor court shoes - netball shoes, volleyball shoes, or basketball shoes would be suitable.
* Wear contacts or sports glasses if possible.
**[[OTHER DETAILS]]**
Only those on the “going” list are permitted to play. If you are on the waitlist, or not registered at all, you will not be permitted to play.

Philosophy Roundtable: Truth and the pragmatism tradition
Please join us this Sunday to discuss truth and the pragmatism tradition. We will meet at the Captain Melville at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp.
The pragmatism tradition is a philosophical tradition originating in 1870s America that evaluates ideas, theories, and beliefs based on their practical consequences and real-world usefulness. It asserts that truth is not absolute but is an evolving tool for problem-solving, continuous adaptation, and effective action. Key thinkers involved include Pierce, James, Dewey, Rorty and Putnam.
**Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee** (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs, venue costs, etc.
There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged.
This event is also posted to the Socrates Cafe group.
Topic questions below, however please note these are open sessions not strict to the below:
* 1\. When you say something is "true\," what are you actually claiming about it?
2\. How do you decide whether something is true — in practice\, not in theory?
3\. Could a belief be true if it made no difference to anything — nothing you'd ever see\, do\, or expect?
4\. Is a useful belief that turns out to be false worth less than a true belief that's completely useless?
5\. Is there any difference between "true" and "what everyone would end up agreeing on if we investigated as thoroughly as humanly possible"?
6\. When science tells us something is true\, is it uncovering the world as it really is — or building tools that work well enough for now?
7\. Can any description of the world be completely neutral — free of all judgment about what matters?
8\. If most of your deepest beliefs are products of where and when you happened to be born\, does that make them less trustworthy?
Hope to see you there!
The Reading Room
Step into the room, not just to read, but to experience what happens when curious, learning minds gather in the same space. There’s something unexpectedly powerful about people arriving with different ideas, perspectives, and questions, then discovering what unfolds when they pause, explore, and reflect together.
This isn’t a traditional book club—there’s no assigned reading, no pressure to perform—just a simple rhythm:
60-Minute Flow:
**👋 0:00–0:15 \| Arrive & Introductions**
**📖 0:15–0:30 \| Quiet Reading Time**
Settle in with your book, article, or notes. Highlight something that stands out—a line, an idea, or even something you disagree with. This is your space to explore.
**💬 0:30–0:45 \| Sharing & Insights**
We come back together to share what we picked up. It can be a quote, a question, a new perspective—anything that sparked your thinking. Expect a mix of ideas and thoughtful discussions.
**🤝 0:45–1:00 \| Open Networking**
A wrap with relaxed conversation. Swap recommendations, continue discussions, or simply connect with others

Thoughtstorm® Session Topic: Intl Day of Living Together in Peace, Yarraville
Would you like to enhance your creativity, confidence and increase your awareness? We’d love you to join us to Thoughtstorm® the topic International Day of Living Together in Peace in the warm, friendly environment of the Yarraville Community Centre.
How Thoughtstorm came about
Thoughtstorm is a technique developed from a seed of speculation: are there more effective (rational, cooperative, compassionate) ways of thinking? Methods whose long-term consequences will not lead to oblivion. This is the genesis of Thoughtstorm.
What is it?
For anyone with an interest in leadership, deeper conversations or creative problem solving, something much more than a group discussion occurs. What is experienced in Thoughtstorm is a forgotten sensory ability - mind-linking. An evolution in human thinking and learning.
The direction moves from a narrow range of possibility into discovering corecepts, when individual minds merge into a much more powerful collective awareness and experience a deeper, more compassionate comprehension of reality. Corecepts trigger intuitive recognition and agreement by the group, a ‘Why, of course!’ reaction.
New insights guaranteed!
Because this process taps into abilities already present in the human mind and into aggregates of consciousness straining to express themselves, very little practice is required.
Would you like to see and understand things in a way that is new for all of us? Would you like to develop your consciousness and your creative intelligence? Would you like to be inspired to create positive change?
Then come and join us to Thoughtstorm together.
If it’s your first time to Thoughtstorm, please RSVP early to give plenty of time to arrange a brief prep call on Zoom to go over the Thoughtstorm procedures so we can all get started on time together.
**Agenda:**
4pm - Arrive, meet and greet, read over Thoughtstorm instructions
4.15pm - Begin the Thoughtstorm
5.15pm - Finish
When you RSVP we will be in touch with the details.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Book summary:
On a hot day in Bethlehem, a twelve-year-old Palestinian-American girl is yelled at by a group of men outside the Church of the Nativity. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: 'You exist too much,' she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East--from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine--Zaina Arafat's debut novel traces her protagonist's progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.
