FDLE: Activist prompted BlueWare probe

'I was just trying to do my civic duty,' Matthew Nye says

A Florida Department of Law Enforcement document confirms that local political activist Matthew Nye was the source who jump-started the criminal investigation of former Brevard County Clerk of Courts Mitch Needelman and Melbourne technology company BlueWare.

The document indicates that Nye discussed with the FDLE issues related to Needelman, BlueWare executives and William Matthew Dupree, a political associate of Needelman’s who now works for BlueWare.

The initial FDLE interview with Nye took place on July 16, 2012.

According to the FDLE document, Nye told investigators he is a friend and supporter of Scott Ellis, the former county clerk of courts who defeated Needelman in the August 2012 primary, and who went on to win in the general election.

Ellis has been a frequent critic of Needelman and his dealings with BlueWare.

The FDLE document said Nye told investigators he had received information from former BlueWare executive Nick Geaney about alleged improprieties related to a document-scanning contract BlueWare received from Needelman.

Needelman, Dupree and BlueWare Chief Executive Officer Rose Harr all face multiple felony charges. The FDLE alleges that BlueWare received the $8.52 million contract in return for illegal campaign contributions to Needelman’s campaign.

The FDLE document said Nye “requested the meeting” with the FDLE to report alleged illegal activities by Needelman, and that “based upon the information provided by Nye,” the case was opened.

On Aug 15 — the day Dupree and Needelman were arrested — Nye told FLORIDA TODAY that “I was just trying to do my civic duty” by providing information to the FDLE.

Nye, a resident of Suntree, is a Tea Party organizer who worked on Ellis’ campaign. He is a 2014 candidate for Brevard County Commission.
