Wednesday Griffith Park Night Hike - 3 Mile Junction Hike
Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round Lot 2, 34.13388889,-118.28500000, Los Angeles, ca, USJoin us for this midweek get-away. I've done this hike a few times and it's a nice alternative to Beaudry. This MODERATELY-PACED hike will take about 2.5 to 3 hours and is 4 to 5 miles. We walk up a fire road.
Bring WATER, hiking shoes, hiking poles and an extra layer. Bring a head lamp. Arrive 10 to 15 earlier, we leave exactly on time. If you cannot make it, please update your RSVP.
How to get there:
Take the Los Feliz/Crystal Springs entrance to the park just off the I-5 freeway. Go North on Crystal Springs into the park. At the second stop sign you'll come to a four way intersection. The ranger station should be on your right. Make a left at that intersection, go up the road a little bit, and you'll be forced to turn right into merry-go-round lot #1. Just drive through lot #1 and down the road a little ways and you'll be in lot #2. We meet at the far end of parking lot 2. (That's the other end of from where you drove in.)Please be aware that Assistant Organizers, Event Hosts, and support hikers are volunteers and organize hikes without compensation and assume absolutely no responsibility for you or your guests. By signing up for a hike, or any other event organized by this group, you are acknowledging that you are aware and have made your guests aware of the risks, dangers, and hazards associated with any outdoor activity, and you accept, and fully assume all such risks, dangers, and hazards, and further agree to release, and discharge the Organizer, Assistant Organizers, and Event Hosts of Los Angeles Hiking & Fitness Meetup Group from, and against any, and all liability arising from your and your guest's participation in the group activities. Trail Work on Echo mountain.
Chaney Trail, Altadena, CA, USI ledy has received a permit to enter the closed-off burned zone from the Eaton Fire to start trail work on Echo Mountain trails and surrounding trails. Please join her if you have free time.
THE PLAN
We need to do brush clearance, sand bagging, maybe some small retaining wall installment, depending on how many people sign up, graffiti removal, and anything else that needs to be done. There is a lot of work to be done since we haven't been doing any maintenance due to the fire.
HISTORY
The lower Sam Merrill Trail is the most heavily used trail in the San Gabriel Mountains. It is frequented with approximately 4,000 recreators in a single weekend. With its close proximity to the second largest metropolitan area in the U.S., it is easily accessible for day hikers and trail runners of every fitness level. But the trail has suffered greatly over continued neglect, and the rains of this past winter weren’t any help. Erosion, mini slides, and overgrowth have taken their toll on the trail and even taken a life.
Restoring the trail to a safer level is possible but only thru the support of volunteers like you. We hope you can join us now or the next time!
You will need to have:
• Long Pants and Long Sleeve Shirt
• Leather Gloves or garden gloves (I may have a couple you can borrow)
• Hiking Shoes or Boots
• A daypack with 2-3 Liters of water, lunch and snacks
• Sunscreen
We will provide:
• Hardhats
• Tools
