О нас

The University of San Francisco Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Speaker Series is produced by the Data Institute. This group brings researchers and practitioners together with students in the MS in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence graduate program, faculty, and interested members of the public to discuss topics of interest in analytics and data science.

Talks take place in person on Fridays from 12:30–2:00 pm at the USF Downtown San Francisco campus, located at 101 Howard Street in the East Cut neighborhood, at the heart of San Francisco’s downtown innovation corridor. We encourage attendees to bring their lunch and join us for these mid-day conversations.

Talk recordings are made available subject to speaker permission. You can find the recorded talks at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN0kf0sI01-FXPZdWAA-uMA

To Merge or Not to Merge? Biodiversity Data Across Platforms

101 Howard St, University of San Francisco - Downtown Campus, San Francisco, CA 94105, San Francisco, Ca, US

We are excited to welcome Dr Cody Carroll to the USF Data Science Speaker Series for a special summer talk.

Dr. Cody Carroll is an Assistant Professor with joint appointments in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Master of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence program at the University of San Francisco. His research focuses on functional and longitudinal data analysis, particularly in the context of human growth and aging, as well as interdisciplinary applications of statistics and data science.

    ### Talk Abstract

Citizen science platforms such as iNaturalist and eBird have transformed biodiversity monitoring by generating massive datasets through public participation. However, differences in observer behavior, sampling patterns, and reporting styles across platforms can introduce biases that make data integration challenging.
In this talk, Cody will present a statistical framework for evaluating whether biodiversity data collected across platforms can be reliably combined. Using a novel method based on circular optimal transport, the research examines seasonal observation patterns across more than 250 bird species in Northern California and Nevada. The findings show that the vast majority of species display statistically compatible patterns between platforms, supporting the potential for broader integration of citizen-generated biodiversity data.
This work highlights how statistical methods can help strengthen large-scale environmental monitoring and support future biodiversity research and policy efforts.

We hope you can join us.

You’re Not Late, You’re Early: Career Value in the AI Era

101 Howard St, University of San Francisco - Downtown Campus, San Francisco, CA 94105, San Francisco, Ca, US

We are excited to welcome Josh Drean for a thought-provoking conversation on AI and Data Ethics.

In this session, Josh will explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping the workforce and why today’s students may be more prepared for this shift than they realize. Drawing from his upcoming book, After the Jobs Are Gone: How to Prove Your Value in the Post-Employment Era, he will discuss how adaptability, contribution, and portable skills are becoming increasingly important in a rapidly changing world.

Josh is a three-time startup founder, author, and workforce futurist. He is the co-author of Employment is Dead (Harvard Business Review Press) and co-founder of Decentrive, a contribution-based work ecosystem. His work on artificial intelligence and the future of work has been featured in Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Fast Company, and MIT Technology Review.

Join us for an engaging discussion on the future of work and what it means to create value in the age of artificial intelligence.
