Engineering AI Agentic Systems: Decisions, Tradeoffs, and Production Reality
**Topic: Engineering AI Agentic Systems: Decisions, Tradeoffs, and Production Reality**
Agenda:
6:00 PM – Networking and refreshments
6:30 PM – Presentation commences
7:15 PM – Q&A
7:30 PM – Networking and refreshments
8:00 PM – Event concludes
**Abstract:**
Everyone can get an agent working in a weekend. Shipping one to production is a different problem.
This talk is a systems engineering lens on agentic AI, starting from the moment a single LLM call becomes a decision loop through the architectural tradeoffs that determine whether it survives contact with reality.
We'll cover the control spectrum between deterministic workflows and autonomous agent loops, multi-agent coordination, state management, and what a real control plane looks like beyond rate limiting and logging. We'll also cover the failure modes that don't appear in demos: runaway costs, missing stopping conditions, and observability gaps.
You'll leave with a framework that treats human-in-the-loop design, model selection, and control plane engineering as first-class architectural decisions, because agentic systems are not prompt engineering problems. They are systems engineering problems.

Joint event with the Statistical Society of Australia!
**Felicia Bongiovanni: "Inferring Time of Infection Based on Antibody Data Through a Hierarchical Bayesian Framework"**
**Abstract:** Time-since-event prediction is a powerful tool to reconstruct histories of an event. It is commonly used in biomedicine to predict the beginning of tumor growth, to predict how long ago someone was infected with a disease, and even to predict the time since death for criminal investigations. Inference through Bayesian statistics and mathematical modelling can allow for time-since-event prediction and provide insight into the mechanisms driving an event. Machine learning is also used for time-since-event prediction but lacks the mechanistic insight Bayesian inference can provide. However, Bayesian inference, especially through Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, can be computationally expensive and time-consuming. In this talk, I describe a method for combining Bayesian inference with machine learning to improve computational efficiency while also maintaining mechanistic insight. This is demonstrated through the case study of estimating time-since-infection using antibody data.
**Speaker bio:** Felicia is a PhD candidate at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research where she is conducting mathematical modelling of the immune response to understand more about infectious disease dynamics. In another life, she was a data analyst for the National Health Funding Body in Canberra through the Australia Bureau of Statistics Data Graduate Program.

Watch Anzac Day Parade and (optional) Lunch Afterward with Christian Gatherings
Hi Guys,
With Anzac Day on April 25, lets watch the Anzac Day march/parade and then later have lunch at the food court at South Gate afterword.
For those who have not been, the ANZAC Day march is a really special event.
For those who wish to watch the march/parade, we will meet at 10am at the Floral Clock (see map pin and image below). Look for the really tall guy – that’s me. (I'll most likely be wearing a blue Australia hat). At around 10:15, we will find a spot to watch the parade for about an hour/hour and a half. We won't be too far from the Floral Clock. At around 12pm or so (maybe 12:30pm), we will head over to the South Gate food court.
For anyone who just wants to come to the lunch after, we will arrive at the South Gate Food Court at around 11:45am or 12pm.
Should be all finished by around 1:45pm.
Notes:
**(1) Please Bring Suitable clothes** depending on the weather forecast (coat/umbrella/hat etc.)
**(2) Allow extra time for arriving there**. Parking can be difficult. Public transport can be easiest option but remember there are no trams running down St Kilda Road because of the parade. Also, if you are on the opposite side of St Kilda Road to the meeting point, it may take time to cross because of the parade (usually, they don't allow you to cross the road while the parade is on, but sometimes they do).
**(3) Call or text me** on 0437 595 848 if you are having trouble finding us.
(4) During our lunch, we will have a short discussion with the topic 'What does ANZAC Day mean to you? What do you think of sacrifice and service?'

**Abstract**
GitHub Copilot is powerful, but what if you could scale from a solo AI assistant to an entire team of specialized agents working in parallel? This session introduces Squad: an open-source framework for multi-agent orchestration that lets you define teams of AI agents with specific roles, responsibilities, and expertise.
We'll progress from Copilot basics to the Copilot CLI, explore how Agents add autonomy, and see how Instructions and Skills let you customize agent behavior. Then, the climax: a live demo where a Squad team of 3 agents (Lead, Developer, Tester) stands up and builds a working application in real-time, showcasing true multi-agent collaboration.
Whether you're new to AI or exploring how to scale your use of Copilot, this session will show you what's possible when agents work as a team.

Prompt vs. Paintbrush
AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s?
This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation?
We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee.
