Re: [ia-55] AT&T Mobile App Hackathon || UX Participation Needed

I have nothing to do with the organization of this event but i have attended over 25 hackathons  and have never, ever heard of the organizer retaining any sort of ownership of what is created.  I personally know ten startup companies including my own that started at hackathons.  One of them is called Zaarly and was invested in by Ashton Kutcher and later went on to raise 15M.

Ownership is absolutely ludicrous, nobody would ever attend if that is how they worked.  They do it to incentivize the use of their sponsors APIs.  And because it is fantastic publicity.. Which is why they reserve the right to publicize, hence the media consent legalese ...  but they definitely can't claim ownership to what you create, only perhaps a nonexclusive to the story of it being created.  Ask any tech industry lawyer.

FYI, It does. I was a Senior Producer at Disney Online and the nomenclature indicates that they can do anything they want, with the IP.

I wrote the first contractual agreement that that lawyers, followed, back int 2001 with Fantasia 2000. While producing 300 other sites that year.

This is typical of any Hacka-Thon. They own what you do. Why don't you think if they give you time and space, plus an award. They wouldn't own it?

Just wanted the UX community to be aware of it.

Are you the sponsor or creator of this event?

FYI that’s a textbook standard media release.  Has nothing to do with IP and would not be interpreted as such.

This is the waiver at the bottom when you register. The way this is worded, it includes "activity of any nature created".  This can be interpreted as anything created at the Hackathon.

MEDIA CONSENT AND RELEASE

By participating in this Hackathon, I acknowledge and irrevocably grant to AT&T, its parent, subsidiaries, affiliates, related companies and any of its legal representatives, agents, licensees, permitees or assigns (“AT&T”), the perpetual, worldwide, exclusive  license, right and permission to copyright and/or trademark in the name of AT&T and to use in any form or fashion, including, but not limited to, advertising, publicity and all other purposes deemed appropriate by AT&T, my name, signature, picture, image, likeness, voice, poses, plays, appearances, movements, or any other indicia of my identity or activity of any nature created, depicted, captured or recorded at the Hackathon by or at the direction of AT&T (collectively, “Materials”) in or in connection with  any and all media of any kind and nature now known or developed in the future (collectively “Media”), for any purpose, in any manner, without further notification, authorization or compensation to me or anyone acting on my behalf. I understand that AT&T may use all Materials at its sole discretion and that I do not have any right to inspect or approve the use of the Materials in any Media.  AT&T may transfer all of the rights granted by this Media Consent and allow other third parties to use such Materials in Media.  I further waive, assign and release to AT&T all rights associated with the Materials and release AT&T from any liability associated with the Materials or AT&T’s use of the Materials in any Media. I represent and warrant that I am at least 18 years of age and have the full legal capacity to grant this consent and release, and have read and understand my consent and release.

At the last ATT hackathon, they were adamant about explaining how they don’t own any piece of the projects.

p.s. I’m a backend developer so definitely looking to partner up with some UX folks

On Sept. 7th & 8th, there will be an AT&T Mobile App Hackathon at CoLoft in Santa Monica. It's important that UX professionals become involved with the local hackathon scene.

The organizers of the event are looking for:

1.    A UX person to serve as a Sensei to provide guidance to others designing apps.

2.    Lots of UX professionals who would love the opportunity to get hands-on experience creating mobile apps. This is a free opportunity to expand your skill set in an important and valuable way.

If you are interested in being a Sensei, please contact: Fiona Xue, fionaxue[at]uw.edu

To register: http://mobileappitcanwait.eventbrite.com/

Best, Crystal

Please note this is not a Los Angeles User Experience Meetup event
