Rails Girls is an organization out of Finland that organizes workshops giving women an introduction to Ruby on Rails (http://rubyonrails.org/), an open-source web framework. They've previously held events in Helsinki and Singapore, and they'll be hosting a workshop in Shanghai on Nov 20-21.

Who is this aimed for? Women of any age with basic knowledge of working with a computer. We’ve had people of all ages taking part. Most of the program is run in english and please bring your laptop.

Can men attend? Not this time. but if you are accompanied by an interested lady. Also, girls are given a priority.

I know how to program - How can I help?We’re also looking for people to be coaches. We’ll have a two-three hour workshop before the event to walk you through the curriculum. Email us.

Instruction will be available in both English and Chinese, pending whatever works best for the group. They are hoping to accommodate 50 women, who will work in small groups of 6-8, depending on how many coaches they have on hand.

Rails Girls philosophy

Show sparks, personality and keep in mind the big picture. Explain, repeat and always tie what you’re telling into a larger context. Internet was made by people and it doesn’t break by a little tinkering. Continuously show the human side: encourage coaches to talk about open source communities, their programming idols and their aspirations. Copy-pasting rules. Programming per se isn’t central - you can’t really learn to speak chinese in one day, in a similar manner you can only learn the basic vocabulary and expressions in coding. The goal of every event is to make something visible! Girls run this world! But also women, ladies, even boys are allowed in. More than semantics we’re interested in a mindset. Both founders were born in the Spice Girls era, they don’t see the word girl as condescending or cutesy-cute.

Rails Girls 活动是非盈利性的。我们不收取任何费用，也不会向教练或演讲者支付报酬。

参与活动不需要编程经验，也没有年龄限制。只要有一台笔记本和好奇心就可以参加活动！

这里将不会有正式的演说台或辩论会，气氛最好是随和与务实的。越少抽象概念，越多参与精神越好！

Rails Girls里的”Girls”不仅限于字面上的“女孩”，而是指一种年轻上进的心理状态。不过我们的第一次活动只针对女性。
