February Meetup - Discussing Architecture Choices

Hey Hackers,

This month we're going to have an open discussion about the architecture choices we've made and will have to make. Big bets, little tweaks, happy endings and total disasters.

We'll kick things off with three quick, 5-minute stories from Eli, Ten and Ben. Then we'll open it up for discussion. We want to hear about the hard decisions you're facing, the things you did that worked out brilliantly and the choices you made that made things go pear shaped. Please bring questions, stories and an open mind.

We'll provide lunch (details TBD).

See you all soon!

I had a comment on the "how to convince others in the business that paying down technical debt is worthwhile". What I've done in the past that was successful was to make a business case for it. Ultimately, technical debt hurts the company in two ways:

    1. Increases risk to continuing operations by a higher likelihood of bugs, regressions, and operational issues
    2. Decreases the company's agility to react to customer needs or competitors

I think if you can make that points, get some time to reduce some technical debt, and then show a reduction in bugs/regressions or the ability to fix bugs/add features quicker you won't have to make the case again

I'd be happy to talk through specifics of how I've done this in the past if anyone is interested.

Thanks everybody, that was great! Really enjoyed hearing everyone's stories. Next time we'll spend less time with introductions and dive right into the meaty goodness.
