3D Vision & Kinect Hacking Meetup #9! (HackerDojo in Mountain View)

Hey everyone, It's about time we all got together and shared our 3D vision hacks, demos, research, and products again!

We will have an hour of presentations and demos followed by an informal discussion period. If you're interested in giving a presentation, please let me know what you'd like to talk about. Presentations should be no longer than 10 minutes. Both technical and nontechnical presentations are welcome as long as they relate to 3D vision.

Schedule of speakers:

- Joel Franusic - Microsoft's Kinect Startup Accelerator

- Rob Wang - Kinect-based hand tracking Prototype

- Amir Hirsch - ZigFu update, including in-browser plugin!

- Dennis Lin - Nuvixa / StagePresence

- Ben McChesney - Helios's Kinect work

- Anand Iyer - 3D Face scanning idea

Location note: We will be in 140B, the back room of HackerDojo. Please sign in at the front desk and then proceed to the back. Note the parking diagram http://wiki.hackerdoj...

Excellent. The MSFT dude Dave who said this is the time to start learning about this is correct!!! When google comes out with their version you will be ready to work for them!!! The Helios dude who did the kinect demo for clients. That has applicability to a lot of other companies because this his something they can do and use now for trade shows, sales demos, etc.. Would it possible to do a deep dive into the flash/c++ of how they did this? Would mean more business for helios and make recruiting easier for them. I know c++ and I know flash, there is no way I can easily incorporate kinect into a webpage or webapp without spending a mess load of time... would be good for managers to see what is possible so they can start investing resources... amazing!!!

Next time please practice your presentations. Hackers should try connecting to projectors AHEAD of time.

It was very interesting to see what different people are doing with computer vision and the Microsoft kinect. They gave me a few pointers on where I can get started.

btw everybody, I just got PCL's open source version of Kinect Fusion working today! (http://www.pointclouds.org/news/kinectfusion-open-source.html) It hasn't officially been released. I hoping to use it to do 3D modelling and developing image understanding algorithms, as well as stuff like store product searching where you walk into a store and can ask your phone to tell you where a certain product is. It would pull up a floor map and a picture of the product on the shelf.

@Ken - Do you know of what software to use for live stream/local recording? I found this http://www.playerdiy.com/configuration/addons/rtmp.html
    I've never tried it.
I was thinking about how to do the live streaming, but the thing is that it might not be worth doing it live. Because unless you can interact, whats the point? And two-way live streaming doesn't seem possible to me. Of course, if someone knows how to do it and can help make it happen, I'm all for it!

It will be great if there will be any possibility of assist to the meetings online because I'm in Spain and I'm not able to assist to these in person :(

@Ken -- are you able to help out on Tuesday, or are you more thinking longer term. We also do have events in SF from time to time.

@Matt, I've never tried it before. I've used web cams with skype but not for live streaming. So, I don't have any experience with specific hardware either.

@David -- thanks for offering. Has this worked well for recording speakers off the computer's built-in webcam, with the computer a few feet away? I'm concerned it might be hard to see what's going on in the demos. Are there good external webcam + directional mic combos you'd recommend?

If you guys have an internet connection and a web cam, I can try to put together the necessary software and server to do live streaming.

@Kenneth -- I have not been setting up livestreaming at the meetups, but I'd certainly be open to it if someone else wants to handle setting it up.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
