Re-Cycling Exploration of Staten Island - Recreational / Exercise Ride (Take 2)

Details

This will be a Re-Cycling Exploration of Staten Island - Recreational / Exercise Ride. We did this ride on 6/29, and it was fun. But we cut it short and only made 1/4 of the way around, but 25 total miles.

This time, we'll bike the opposite direction. Heading out over the east side and trying, again, to work our way fully around. We will, however, play it by ear.

Rough route plan - http://goo.gl/maps/wrQOr - Approx 30'ish miles
Pace: A comfortable 10-15mph. Our 6/29 ride was almost all flat terrain.

Meet at the South Ferry terminal, Manhattan side @ 11am. Please meet OUTSIDE the terminal, to the right of the entrance doors.

If you're like me.. Staten Island is mostly a mystery to you. You've probably ridden the ferry there and back again, and that's it. Or finished the annual 5Boro ride on SI, and rode to the ferry.

Let's explore.

Things to bring:

Helmet Hydration Spare tubes, patch kit & mini tools to change a flat Cash, credit card, metro card, ID Positive Attitude Road, Hybrid, Cyclocross bikes recommended.

SI Ferry Bicyclist Rules of Conduct:

Bicycles are permitted but must be stored in the designated bicycle storage areas. Bicyclists must board on the lower level at both the St. George and Whitehall Ferry Terminals. Bicyclists are subject to all Passenger Rules of Conduct. Bicyclists must dismount and walk their bicycles to the waiting area and when boarding and departing the boat. Bicyclists must stay clear of pedestrians. All bicyclists are subject to screening upon arrival at the ferry terminals. Bicycles may not be left in racks on vessels for more than 30 minutes (one trip). Bicycles left on the vessel after each trip will be removed. Bicycles left in outdoor racks for more than 24 hours will be removed. DOT is not responsible for stolen or damaged bicycles.

POSSIBLE BONUS: There is a huge German Biergarten at the southern end of SI. If.. and only if.. they permit bikes in the fenced-in garden area, we will stop for food and/or brew. I'm checking with the establishment to see if this is permissible.

We'll make other snack / fluid stops along the way, as needed.

UPDATE (7/1): Just got word from Killmeyer's Old Bavaria Inn (http://www.killmeyers.com/).. Good News! They're happy to let us bring our bikes into the biergarten. There's a fence gate we can use, when we get there.

Also, I've modified the route. It's 10 miles shorter, and the return trip will bring us thru a wildlife marshland refuge and 2 parks. It's roughly 20 miles to Killmyers via the eastern shoreline, then we'll take a more direct route back thru the middle of SI.

More good news is.. if you look at the terrain map, there are almost no hills to contend with. Nice!
