- UPDATE 6/27 -
Apologies for lack of updates. Completely lost track of time. Weather is looking GREAT for tomorrow, so.. let's get this party started! 3rd time is a charm.. Brooklyn or Bust.
THERE IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION HERE. READ TO THE VERY LAST PERIOD.
9:30 AM at Starbucks @ 33 Hillel Pl, Brooklyn, NY 11210 ( http://goo.gl/hKznJn )
Me: The infamous Yellow Bandanna
Take the 2 or 5 Train to the Last Stop @ Flatbush Av - Brooklyn College (Note.. MTA says there is weekend maintenance on the 5-train ( http://web.mta.info/weekender/lineview.html?r=5 ) affecting service in the Bronx, if you're coming from that direction. There are NO weekend service issues planned for the 2-Train, so you're good to go.
Starbucks is 1 block away from the train stop.
It appears that, no matter where we start, we'll have an approx 5 mile walk to Dead Horse Bay & Floyd Bennett Field. Flatbush will be our easiest walking option, and will have plenty of resources along the way, if anyone needs to stop & grab fluids or snacks (though please try to have those handy in advance).
By approx mile 11, we'll be on Rockaway Beach.. so, if necessary, we can cheat a little and hop the A-Train or S-Train to Broad Channel and the Wetlands / Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge areas. Being near the beach with tons of sun will sap strength, so it may be a sensible option. According to MTA, those trains will run standard schedules.
Again.. I cannot stress enough, the importance of having plenty of fluids (and fruits & snacks) on this walk. After we've left Flatbush for FB Field & DH Bay, the beach / boardwalk area will be your next and only other chance to refuel.
This is our route: Please note the mileage. It'll be very flat, but between 15-20 miles. We will take an assessment of everyone's condition by the half-way mark, for health & safety.
Key map points:
1) Starbucks - Meeting Spot @ 33 Hillel Pl, Brooklyn, NY 11210
2) Dead Horse Bay - http://www.scoutingny.com/the-weirdest-beach-in-nyc/
3) Floyd Bennett Field - http://www.nyharborparks.org/visit/flbe.html
4) Rockaway Beach 116th St - A/S Trains if we use that option (S is a shuttle to Broad Channel)
5) Broad Channel Wetlands - limited access - http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/Q478/map
6) Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge - http://www.nyharborparks.org/visit/jaba.html
7) Broad Channel A/S Train Stop - FINISH
IMPORTANT INFORMATION STARTS HERE:
We'll have no problem with DH Bay or FB Field. However, the BC Wetlands (no set hours) and JB Wildlife Refuge technically "close" at 5pm. These hours pertain to the official ranger stations. The trails on JB WR are open dawn to dusk. Sunset is 8:31pm on Saturday.
Please, NO pets. SOME areas allow pets, but I haven't researched specifically. Also, this would be overwhelming for them, due to heat and humidity. Speaking of which..
HUMIDITY / WEATHER - IMPORTANT INFO:
While the temperatures will be a very nice hi-70s to low-80s.. the sheer sun and humidity will be BRUTAL. We will see 35-50% humidity. YOU WILL DEHYDRATE! So once again, I cannot stress this enough.. BRING LOTS OF WATER! I really recommend a backpack bladder pack. Don't worry much about rest-room breaks.. because you'll sweat it out.
IF YOU STOP SWEATING or START TO FEEL CHILLED in the sun & heat.. Drink Up & Speak Up! You are dehydrated!
DEAD HORSE BAY:
Once more, I cannot stress enough, the need for sturdy, comfortable, thick-soled shoes or hiking boots. USE CAUTION WHEN WALKING HERE. Take a look at the links I provided above and you'll understand why.
END OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION.
See you in the morning :-D
- UPDATE 5/23 -
To be re-rescheduled.. because your organizer isn't Hard Core Enough to beat down the flu >-(
New date TBD. The 6/28 date is tentative for now.
- UPDATE 4/14 -
First.. I regret I need to reschedule. There is a chance of rain on 4/19, and something has also come up that I need to be present for. Apologies for that. My next free Saturday is 5/24.
Next.. Folks.. we will be walking approx 15 miles. It is IMPERITIVE you bring Sunscreen, Plenty of Water, a hat/umbrella for mobile shade, and I'd recommend some fruit or energy bars.
VERY IMPORTANT: We will be near the beach, so expect intense sun. We'll cut it short for safety if necessary, or when everyone is finally worn out. Also, on this route, we won't have anyplace to stop for a lunch break. You'll need to bring your own.
- Broad Channel Wetlands | http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/Q478/map
- Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge | http://www.nyharborparks.org/visit/jaba.html
- Dead Horse Bay | http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/dead-horse-bay
** IMPORTANT ** Dead Horse Bay is EXACTLY what it sounds like. You will need STURDY SHOES/BOOTS because it is littered with broken glass and bones. You do not want thin-soled shoes, here. Expect to be walking on Sand, Gravel & Marsh.
- Floyd Bennett Field | http://www.nyharborparks.org/visit/flbe.html
- Food & Drink | By the time we finish, we'll be whipped. I know a good spot or two in the South Brooklyn area to grab good beer and food. We'll hit the subway when possible to get there.
Again.. safety & health first. It'll be Hard Core, but never Stupid.
Be sure to bring your cameras and spare batteries. There will be some amazing photo opportunities!
Let me reiterate: DO NOT BE A NO-SHOW
Location Brooklyn Plan TBD Time 10am until... ALL DAMN DAY
You Trust me, don't you? Who's in? Minor Note: We will be in the 5Boros regional area for this one. No major metro rail. No other promises. ------
IMPORTANT NOTE : This is a HCE : Hard Core Explore event. I use these events as test beds to look for 5BE worthy events for all. Be prepared for anything, everything or.. Nothing. It's a crapshoot. I need a small but nimble team of adventurous minded troublemakers. I lead, you follow. No moaning, groaning, bitching or whining. If you do? You're in time-out for 30 days. I'll suspend your access to our events for a month. DO NOT BE A NO-SHOW Also: Bring notepads, tablets, cameras, positive attitudes and a Kick Ass mentality! We're going to discover what does and doesn't work.. And we're going to get Dirty in the process! What WE do today, determines what we all do tomorrow. Got game? Bring it!
