Let's visit the abandoned Smallpox Hospital also known as the Renwick Ruins. The Hospital was designed by James Renwick Jr.
******* We will not be entering the RUINS******
We'll be taking a loop around the Island (approximately a little over 5 miles walking round trip). We will first visit the Renwick Ruins and then make our way over to the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse (formerly known as the Blackwell Island Lighthouse).
Estimated time: 2 - 3 hours
This event will be outdoors and will involve light to moderate walking. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear the proper footwear. Bring snacks and water. Bug spray and SPF recommended. This activity is NOT recommended if you will have difficulty walking several miles outdoors. Walk/Hike at your own risk.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Without inclement weather/rain, there should be plenty of outdoor natural light. Bring the proper camera bags suitable for outdoor conditions and walking/hiking.
Feel free to bring binoculars.

Yes, the Tram will take you there and right at the meeting spot...
excited about this! my hubby Kevin and I really want to move to this island :)
Is the meeting spot near the F train stop? Where do I go?
Hi Richard, We'll be meeting at the TRAM station on Roosevelt Island.
Here's everything you need to know about getting to Roosevelt Island. http://www.rioc.com/transportation.htm
There's even parking on the island from the Queens approach for $15 for the day, but it's a 'hike' from the parking garage to the Tram stop.
Will you be able to give out a cell number in case we need to find someone?
Can we actually enter? A fence looks like it's off-limits. If so, I'm in!
we will be coming via the Tram... from there -where will we all be meeting?
No, we will not be able to enter the ruins, it's still under stabilization and still very dangerous. Meeting location will by the Tram on Roosevelt Island. The F Train stops is also close by.
Is it far from the F stop to the tram station? Can get F train easier.
All is not lost. I'll bring my bolt cutters................Just kidding. I'm still going. 1st time on Roosevelt (formerly Welfare) island. 1st Roosevelt Tram Ride. New perspective on NYC skyline. See the lighthouse. Great organizer. Outdoor activity. What's not to like? Go ahead and cancel. I dare y'all. Less is more!
Description is misleading. I assumed this was an urban exploration event of the ruins itself. Changing my RSVP.
Did the city of New York formerly allow people to go into/walk amongst the ruins? That seems highly dangerous and like a lawsuit waiting to happen--I'd be really surprised if that had been allowed at all in recent times. Still an interesting outing in my opinion.
The city of NY doesn't "allow" a lot of things that people get away with. Shhhh... bring flashlights.. and beer/wine.. and sammiches! We'll quietly camp out into the night & sneak in >-) -- I may or may not be kidding. We'll find out Saturday. p.s. Don't tell anyone! -- p.p.s. For those prone to get lost or be late.. grab my cell# from my RSVP. Don't wait till the last minute.
I wondered the same thing. The last report I heard was morning showers & possible clearing in the afternoon. My
guess would be just see how that plays out....Friday nite
into early Saturday morning............& reschedule if need be.
I'll definitely have to make a decision early on Sat. I live at the south end of Brooklyn, and it will probably take me close to 2 hours to get there, via subway and tram.
Thinking of biking over the Q'boro bridge (to spare my feet:-) Anyone else game? http://www.nycbikemaps.com/spokes/video-bike-ride-across-...![]()

We're keeping an eye on the weather, folks. I see what the forecast is, but I'm also outside walking in the sun. So.. bear with us. IF we do have to reschedule, we'll update the event by Saturday 8am at the latest. So be certain to check your email or this page for updates.
Let's hope the sun prevails. My knee can tell the weather better than the forcasters
Me and my +1 are definitely there. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.
I want to die peacefully, in my sleep, like my grandfather, not
screaming, terrified, like his passengers.
If it's gonna be wet, I think I'll stay home and stop putting off the paperwork. :-) Do something unbelievable so you can brag about it on April 1!
Hope everyone had a great time..Would of loved to go but instead I got to experience and video, photo the birth of 2 baby lambs..What a wonderful day I had too!
It was cold, raining, dark and dreary...it was PERFECT! Thank you everyone for coming out to Roosevelt Island, once home to an Asylum, Smallpox Hospital and Prison (all at the same rime), now an island of luxury apartments (resilient New Yorkers). Thank you for the support and the beautiful pictures of this eccentric island!! - Again, sorry Don about the statue incident :D
It was a peaceful and smooth day, if there were people climbing all over the tram, trying to break into a lighthouse and chasing each other inside the ruins....NOW, that would be CRAZY....Imagine....
It was an encredible day, no hot burning sun to contend with. Pictures are incredibly color saturated on cloudy days. No problem Tess we all had a good laugh ! Thanks again. And see you soon
*Looks left.. * Why yes.. *looks right..* yes indeed. *shuffles feet* That'd be.. CRAZY ;-P Nothing to see here. Just a nice, peaceful, quiet walk in the parks.
Since our March Roosevelt Island meetup, 11 other meetup groups have scheduled Roosevelt Island for the Spring....we were going to repeat this event over the summer, but since Roosevelt Island is the latest meetup hotspot...we'll wait for a different season.
YES! So in!
