Join Us for this unique event of art & musical performances.

David Liang, along with the various contributors to SRP, mix a blend of 1930's Shanghai music, with old & modern jazz & electronica, to create a style that is captivating and .. well, just listen for yourselves. I've provided a couple of samples at the end of this post.

I discovered SRP just over 2 years ago, and had the chance to hear them at Harvard back in Feb '10.  Yes, they actually let me into a college. Harvard, no less! The event was in their auditorium classroom and we were actually sitting at school desks. Luv'd it! 1st time I've sat at a school desk in.. umm.. err.. a couple of years ;-)

Here's the plan:

  7p-7:30p - Group members arrive, meet/greet & check-in.
7:30p-8p - Exhibition tour of Sarah Sze's works.
8p-9:30p -  SRP performance, multimedia show & reception.
  9:30p - But wait, there's more. We'll head to Gael Pub for a Live 2U (U2) show!

You must purchase advance tickets ($15) on your own at the following link: The Shanghai Restoration Project with NeochaEDGE | Asia Society http://j.mp/zJVq2L

See below for a full description of the event.

Chinese-American pianist Dave Liang returns to the Asia Society with The Shanghai Restoration Project, a group renowned for its unique blend of Chinese instrumentation, hip-hop, and electronica. The group draws its inspiration from the 1930s jazz clubs of Shanghai, and the performance features vocalist Zhang Le singing in this distinctive style. Joining the two onstage will be the electronic musician Jamahl Richardson.

The evening will also feature a multimedia presentation from Sean Leow of NeochaEDGE, a Shanghai-based creative agency, introducing the audience to the emerging Chinese creative community. Since coming on the scene in 2007, NeochaEDGE, who works with leading multinational brands, has caught the attention of many, including The New York Times, BBC, CNN, and The Wall Street Journal.

The evening will begin with a free tour of Sarah Sze's exhibtion Infinite Line at 7:30, and be followed by a reception.

The Sarah Sze exhibition was very fascinating, but unfortunately, we were short on time! However, it does run until 3/31, so everyone should consider going back to see this, and spend more time studying her works! Also, there are additional exhibits on the higher floors, we did not have a chance to explore. The performance by Shanghai Restoration (David & Jamahl) was very energetic, and absolutely unique. I hope everyone enjoyed this rare opportunity to see this amazing performance, with special guest appearance by vocalist & composer Le Zhang. They only make it to NYC about once a year.. maybe.. sometimes.. and I think they blend the old, with the new, and include art and multimedia, in a way that really stands out as something to remember. Thanks to all of you who came out to enjoy the evening with us!
