African Americans for Humanism (AAH DC) Monthly Meeting

Details

"The need for critical thinking skills and a humanistic outlook in our world is great. This is no less true in the Black community than in others." African Americans for Humanism The next monthly meeting of African Americans for Humanism DC will be held on August 24, 2013 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM in the Latrobe Room at the Hill Center 921 Pennsylvania Ave SE (entrance on 9th St-elevator access available). The Hill Center is located about 1.5 blocks from the Eastern Market Metro Station. The venue is wheelchair accessible. People with disabilities who anticipate needing accommodations or who have questions about physical access may email sdavis@centerforinquiry.net in advance of the event. All AAH meetings are free and open to the public.

August 24th marks the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. A march that was dedicated to “Justice and Jobs” August marks the first month since the controversial and racially divisive Trayvon Martin verdict. During August we have also seen the public exposure of the use of racist slurs by celebrity chef Paula Deen and pro-football player Riley Cooper. This month’s meeting will consist of an open discussion on the subject of race, racism and racists. How much progress has really been made by African Americans in the past 50 years? What role (positively or negatively) should race play in public policy and the justice system? Is there a “race card” or a mutual lack of understanding and awareness? What role can rationalism and humanism play in combating racism? I look forward to a lively discussion.

You may recall that last month’s meeting was cancelled because I had planned to attend the Blackout Secular Rally NYC but was unable to do so. For those of you who like me weren’t able to go here is a link to the “Free Thinking Island” website that covered the rally and interviewed some of the participants. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQaB4rSM6dQ&feature=youtu.be

Also on August 1, 2013 several AAH leaders were interviewed by the Huffington Post Live. Here is the link to the pod cast. http://live.huffingtonpost.com/r/segment/the-growing-number-of-secular-minorities/51e726b02b8c2a35280001bd
