Lake Erie Wreck Dives

Osprey Dive Charters -
Saturday August 16th 7:00 am

We are headed up to Osprey again for some wrecks! We will be diving on the Dean Richmond (110') and the Indiana (90'). Most of the divers will be staying at the Red Carpet Inn North East:

Red Carpet Inn North East
12264 E Main St
North East, PA 16428

The boat will leave from Monroe Marina at 8:00am, if you arrive 7:00am - 7:30am, you will have plenty of time to load up.

Pre-Dive Meeting: Will be held on Wednesday, August 9th at 6:00 pm at Aquatic Adventures Ohio
Certification Required: Advanced Open Water, with proof of a recent non-training deep, cold dive.

Dive Gear Recommendations:

Drysuit: The water will be cold, expect water temperatures anywhere from 39-45 degrees. Regulator: Using a regulator that is Environmentally Sealed, will reduce the chance for a free flow
Pony/Bailout bottle: Although its not required, Its always nice to have a little extra air with you in case you do have a free flow or other issue. Stop by the shop and we can walk you through some options.

If you would like to go diving before the trip we will be up at Whitestar on August 2nd for the Aqualung Breast Cancer Dive Event.

The day started out great, until we looked at the water. The waves were hitting the breaker wall pretty hard. It was determined that the original plan to dive the Dean Richmond & Indiana would not be the best plan. As it would most likely take an hour or more to get there given the 4-5 footers that we observed. We instead decided to dive the John J Boland. Some of us has 32% ready for the shallower depth, so we head to lighten up the mix for the 130' of Boland. They have a pretty sweet fill station up there and were able to accommodate it quickly. We pulled away from the dock ready to go diving, about 10 minutes into the trip the waves started to get bigger, with a few pounding the boat pretty bad. We were just about there, when the decision was made to turn back, it was just too rough to dive. We plan on going back soon, hopefully in September. Osprey Dive Charters is stand up and Mike did an excellent job! I can't wait to get back.

Any plans to do some shallower Lake Erie dives in the future? I'd love to join in for something where an advanced certification or drysuit isn't required.
