Hi everyone. Things have really quieted down lately in the group, it appears that we've had a lot of busy people. It also doesn't help that I haven't been doing so well lately at getting our meetups scheduled far enough in advance for people to make plans.
So with that in mind, I've decided we're going to skip our meetup this week, and ask instead for ideas and suggestions- and HELP- in putting together a big social gathering for us on a weekend, probably a potluck picnic sort of deal. I've been organizer of this group for a year now and I thought that'd be a good excuse to have a celebration! I'm emailing the organizers of the other two design-based meetup groups (the web developers and the flash guys) to invite them to join in and bring their people too. (We three organizers actually had discussed this last fall but never acted on it.)
I want to try and get as big a gathering as possible, so in order to make it attractive, it'd be great to find a decent place, a park of some kind where we could do some kind of games or something, hopefully with a grill so we can do a cookout. I've got some merchandise that I got from SXSW that I'm going to use for door prize-type giveaways, including one really nice piece of hardware. I also was thinking that, in order to defeat the heat somewhat, maybe we'd do it late in the day and into the evening, and if the place has electrical outlets, I might could arrange to get a projector and DVD player and do a movie if we wanted.
I really want this to be a big "meeting of the tribes" shindig, and get as many folks as can come as possible. So right now I'm asking three specific questions:
1. What day of week would be best for this? Friday, Saturday, Sunday? Lunchtime, afternoon, early evening? Is there a weekend in May that's good for you? Would you rather look at June?
2. Does anyone have any suggestions about a place we can do this? A park or something? Preferably one I don't have to pay to reserve, or at least not pay a lot?
3. Do you have any ideas or suggestions about what we can do for this party, and would you be willing to help?
I'm serious about this people, so if I don't hear from many of you, I'm going to specifically contact you individually and ask for your input. So don't just set this aside and wait to hear what other people have to say! I also want to take special effort to bring out the new people who have joined recently but not been to a meetup yet, or joined in the past few months but haven't been able to come more than once, so even if I've never met you or only met you once, don't be shy.
I've met a lot of great people in our group over the past year, and it'd be great to get as many of us all together at once as possible to meet and learn about each other. So let me know what you have to say. Either replying to this email on the mailing list or posting a reply under this thread on the message board, your choice.
Thanks so much everyone!
