American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) in OC Pages

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, has been at the forefront of a wide range of suicide prevention initiatives in 2010 -- each designed to reduce loss of life from suicide. We are investing in groundbreaking research, new educational campaigns, innovative demonstration projects and critical policy work. And we are expanding our assistance to people whose lives have been affected by suicide, reaching out to offer support and offering opportunities to become involved in prevention.

We are increasing the number of community-based chapters, now at 39, with two-dozen more in development. Orange County is one of those chapters in development. This group of volunteers is dedicated to helping our community learn how you can help to save a life.

With more than 2,700 attempts made every year in Orange County, your help is needed immediately. The are several committees you can volunteer your time and effort for in our community. Try one or try all, either way, you’ll find that there’s a great team of people bringing positivity, passion and friendship in support of our cause.

  • Volunteer Recruitment: This committee is perfect for all networkers and PR experts who have mastered the art of recruiting. This committee is tasked with finding volunteers who will actively participate in the committees below. Volunteers are also encouraged to also serve as chairs.

  • Survivor Outreach Committee- Survivor outreach this year will focus on organizing the annual National Survivors of Suicide Day conference. Volunteers will work to secure materials, location and publicize this event that is one of hundreds experienced across the country simultaneously. Additional opportunities for outreach are also available throughout the year.

  • Programming / Community Education Committee: This committee invites all: public speakers, organizers, networkers, etc. Committee members will volunteer their time to take the AFSP’s mission out to the community. This year’s focus will be on reaching college and high school students in Orange County, but is open to presenting to any and all groups.

  • Spring / Summer Fundraisers Committee: This committee’s soul purpose is to plan events to raise funds and bring awareness to AFSP’s mission while having fun. With a goal of $5,000 this spring, committee members will work to plan, organize and produce several fundraising events throughout Orange County. Big ideas and lots of dedication are welcomed with open arms!

  • Out Of The Darkness Community Walk Committee: Members will work throughout the year to plan the annual 5K walk. They will engage civic groups / leaders, corporate sponsors and the greater community to participate in the walk, donate, and rally support. Volunteers will also publicize the event as well as secure walk materials and entertainment.
