Otter Creek Wilderness, Intermediate 3-day backpack

Details

We'll meet at the Centreville VA Park & Ride and carpool to West Virginia. We'll stop briefly at Seneca Rocks Visitor Center, for views and bathrooms, and then continue to Condon Run trailhead at the south end of Otter Creek Wilderness. We'll hike on the Otter Creek and Possession Camp Trails, past sandstone cliffs and outcrops, and camp at the Green Mtn Trail junction at ~7 miles. On day 2, we'll stop a spectacular lookout, and then descend steeply to Otter Creek, where we'll hike past pools and waterfalls. (Bring a bathing suit!), and then hike up Moore Run trail to a beautiful bog. We'll camp nearby, for a day's distance of 10 miles. Monday, we'll hike out through bogs and over McGowan Mtn, for a days total of 7 miles. Total 3 days distance will be 23.5 miles, 3,000 ft of ascent. Most of the hike is moderate, but short sections along Otter Creek are badly eroded, and the Moore Run bogs are wet and messy, the pace will be moderate, with lots of time for photos, scenery, flora and fauna. Rhododendrons should be in bloom. River-crossing footwear is required, and temperatures can range from the 50s at night to 80 by day. We'll watch the weather- Otter Creek is usually tame, but can flood during heavy rains.
