What we’re about
The Appalachian Mountain Club (“AMC”) is one of the oldest outdoors groups in the United States. We offer activities for all types and levels of outdoor enthusiasts, including hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, kayaking, bicycling and more!
AMC has 12 regional chapters in the Northeast region that stretch from Maine to Washington, D.C. The New York-North Jersey Chapter is the second largest with over 12,000 members. We have over 100,000 members nationally.
Young Members (“YM”) is an affinity group within AMC for members in their 20’s and 30’s. YM holds monthly outdoors events (e.g., day hikes, camping trips, kayaking trips) and a happy hour on every third Thursday of the month (“Thirsty Third Thursdays”). A few times a year, we hold inter-chapter events with YM groups from the 11 other chapters in our organization.
If you’re interested in the outdoors and are looking to make new friends, then please come to one of our events. Please note that we’re open to everyone, including “non-members”!

Join us for an inspiring Winter Speaker Series that brings together local leaders, researchers, specialized experts, advocates, and outdoor enthusiasts to explore how to deepen our connection to the outdoors. Whether you’re curious about climate impacts in the Northeast, eager to learn how to be a more responsible recreationist, or looking for approachable ways to get outdoors more often, this series offers something for everyone. Come ready to explore new ideas, meet fellow nature-lovers, and walk away energized to make a difference.
Our first event sparks curiosity in all of us who live in urban landscapes and love the outdoors ... Discover Urban Foraging!
Wild edible and medicinal plants abound in urban landscapes. Discover the many edible and medicinal plants that thrive in city parks, peek through sidewalk cracks, and grow with abandon in unruly thickets. Learn tips for identification, how to ethically and safely harvest wild plants, and how to prepare them as tasty meals and invaluable medicinal preparations. This program will consist of a Powerpoint presentation highlighting a selection of seasonal plants. Be prepared to take notes and bring your foraging questions!
Our speaker, Heather Houskeeper "The Botanical Hiker," is an herbalist and forest therapy guide, long-distance hiker, and author. Heather has professionally guided others into the natural world through seminars, workshops, and walks since 2010 and is the founder of the School of Plant and Place Connection, an in-person herbal medicine school located in Milford, Pa. Heather has hiked thousands of miles, including the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, studying and working with the plants for food and medicine. She is the author of three trail-inspired books about wild edible and medicinal plants and the Wild Food columnist for Dirt Magazine. Learn more about Heather at: www.thebotanicalhiker.com and www.schoolofplantandplaceconnection.com
This event is hosted by Snow Peak Brooklyn in Williamsburg from 6:00pm-7:30pm. Bedford Station L train is the nearest subway stop. Snacks will be served before the presentation. Come out to socialize with friends and learn how to engage more deeply with the outdoors!
