About us

The Appalachian Mountain Club (“AMC”) is one of the oldest outdoors groups in the United States.  We offer activities for all types and levels of outdoor enthusiasts, including hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, kayaking, bicycling and more!
AMC has 12 regional chapters in the Northeast region that stretch from Maine to Washington, D.C.  The New York-North Jersey Chapter is the second largest with over 12,000 members.  We have over 100,000 members nationally.
Young Members (“YM”) is an affinity group within AMC for members in their 20’s and 30’s.  YM holds monthly outdoors events (e.g., day hikes, camping trips, kayaking trips) and a happy hour on every third Thursday of the month (“Thirsty Third Thursdays”).  A few times a year, we hold inter-chapter events with YM groups from the 11 other chapters in our organization.
If you’re interested in the outdoors and are looking to make new friends, then please come to one of our events.  Please note that we’re open to everyone, including “non-members”!

    Overview

Join the young members (20s and 30s) of the AMC's New York / North Jersey chapter for an exciting weekend at the AMC's Fire Island Cabin! Come paddle, hike, do yoga, and explore the rugged beauty of dunes, salt marshes and Atlantic Ocean beaches on this protected barrier island that is part of the Fire Island National Seashore. The island has no cars or roads, and the Cabin is accessible only by ferry from Bay Shore to Atlantique (see details below).

    Lodging

The Cabin has two 10-bunk co-ed dorm rooms. Outdoor air is well-circulated within the cabin at all times via screened windows and ceiling fans. There is a large, well-stocked commercial kitchen and indoor eating area, two bathrooms, hot outdoor showers, decks, beach chairs and umbrellas, a hammock, yoga equipment, and a gazebo with a library and board games. For water enthusiasts, there are kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddle boards.

    Check-in: 2 p.m. on Friday

Check-out: While the bunks must be vacated by 11 a.m. on Sunday, guests can store their luggage and enjoy the cabin and the island for the rest of the day.

The Cabin has a BYOB policy with alcoholic beverages permitted at happy hour and dinner.

    Activities

We are excited to offer hikes to the Fire Island Lighthouse, yoga mats in our tranquil gazebo, exploration of local towns, and watching the sunset from the Cabin deck. You are welcome to choose your own adventure and spend your time however you see fit, kayaking on the bay or simply chilling on the beach.
