My goal is to build an Adventure Racing(AR) community in the greater Ottawa area. I want this group to become a great place to find training buddies, teammates and skill training opportunities. And just maybe, give people the opportunity to make life long friendships by suffering through some tough races together. My emphasis for the group is on building a community.
This is *NOT* a "shop for an event to keep me busy for a day" meetup group. This is for people who are curious about adventure racing or are already in love with the sport. You don't have to be an athlete to join. You just need to have the willingness to participate.
What is Adventure Racing (AR)? It's a multidisciplinary sport where teams use a map and compass to orient from Check Point(CP) to CP. Race lengths range from 6 hours to 14 days. The goal is to surmount any and all obstacles put in your way. Multidisciplinary means that you may have to hike, bike, swim, white-water, ski, run, mountaineer, rappel, go on horseback, roller-blade etc. The skills you will need depend on the race you enter. Don't worry if you lack certain or most skills. There are plenty of opportunities to learn! If you love the outdoors and are looking for an excuse to learn new skills, this is the perfect place! AR is about pushing yourself and discovering what your mind and body can do.
My personal goal is to improve my skills through: repeated use, practice, racing, teammates, workshops, courses, etc. My racing goal for this summer is to put together a team to participate and finish some smaller 6 hour to 48 hour races. Notice that my goal is to finish, *NOT* compete to win. If you want to compete, please feel free to join and find others with similar goals.
If you really want to know more about AR, there are some GREAT books that contain some truly insane and amazing stories about what people went through on races.
- "The Thrill of Victory, The Agony On My Feet: Tales From the World of Adventure Racing" is truly my favourite and most inspirational book. Feel free to read some of it on Google Books for free!
If you want to learn more about AR, I have a free lending library for anyone who is truly interested in learning. I also have books on AR, orienteering, white water, climbing, mountaineering, etc. I'm happy to meet with prospective individuals and discuss my humble understanding of what AR is all about.
I hope to see you in the great outdoors!
Alex Charron
