About us
Are you good without a god? Hey, so are we!
We all benefit from a supportive community for friends, charity, and fostering a better understanding of secular values with our neighbors. Atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, humanists, skeptics, non-religious, lost tourists, and the generally confused are all welcome to join us!
It is often claimed that atheists are rare when in fact nearly 20% of our nation's population do not believe in a higher power. Still, atheists can feel isolated because the religious community is so organized and outspoken on issues. Building and participating in a community is the first step toward being heard.
Plus - the conversation is great!
The Arkansas Society of Freethinkers is an organization of secular individuals whose goals are to:
Build a supportive and active community.
Promote public acceptance of nonbelievers.
Defend science education and the separation of church and state.
We encourage everyone to suggest events and activities. In addition to various volunteer, social, and public events, our regular events are:
Monthly Lecture Series
1st Tuesday dinner and drinks
New member welcome potluck
Book Club
Pint Night
The "Freespeakers" Toastmasters chapter
Winter Solstice holiday display at the Arkansas State Capitol
Public Events that we regularly support and attend

ASF Book Club - Devil's Knot - Meet the Author
·OnlineOnlineThis is a bonus event. Our regular monthly meeting will be on Sunday August 23rd (RSVP separately for that event here). The following Wednesday, August 26th, ASF will host a zoom meeting with Mara Leveritt, author of the August book pick Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three. A zoom link will be posted in this meetup event at a later date. RSVP for access to the zoom meeting.
Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three by Mara Leveritt, an award-winning Arkansas investigative journalist inducted into the Arkansas Writers' Hall of Fame. This book is available in paperback and ebook, with several options for purchasing used online.
From the publisher's description: "In 2011, one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in American legal history was set right when Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley were released after eighteen years in prison. Award-winning journalist Mara Leveritt’s The Devil’s Knot remains the most comprehensive, insightful reporting ever done on the investigation, trials, and convictions of three teenage boys who became known as the West Memphis Three.
For weeks in 1993, after the murders of three eight-year-old boys, police in West Memphis, Arkansas seemed stymied. Then suddenly, detectives charged three teenagers—alleged members of a satanic cult—with the killings. Despite the witch-hunt atmosphere of the trials, and a case which included stunning investigative blunders, a confession riddled with errors, and an absence of physical evidence linking any of the accused to the crime, the teenagers were convicted. Jurors sentenced Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley to life in prison and Damien Echols, the accused ringleader, to death. The guilty verdicts were popular in their home state—even upheld on appeal—and all three remained in prison until their unprecedented release in August 2011.
With close-up views of its key participants, this award-winning account unravels the many tangled knots of this endlessly shocking case, one which will shape the American legal landscape for years to come."3 attendees
