Our goals. This site is maintained as a way to give all - novice signers, experienced signers and Deaf and Hard-of-hearing people a place to find updated information about community events and news.
ASL Bridge wishes to help people who want to learn ASL or maintain their skills meet other people to practice and create friendships. We also want to engage in recreational activities during which hearing and deaf people can enjoy each other's company without significant communication barriers. Hopefully, we can also offer a supportive group for late-deafened or oral deaf individuals who may not "fit" in either the deaf or hearing worlds.
The ASL Bridge can also help anyone interested in someday becoming an ASL interpreter by providing education, information, and support.
This is a great resource for students of ASL to find out about upcoming Deaf / ASL events. If you know of any upcoming events that are not already posted on our calendar please email me and I will post them!
Please be sure that you are getting the most out of this meetup group. On our web page you will find the following features.
A full calendar of events. We have information for many area events posted to our calendar, not just our own meetup events. Please click on the calendar to find information about other events in DC, MD and VA. If you have information about an event that is not already posted please send it to us!
The Discussion Board. The discussion board has even more information about events and opportunities relating to the Deaf community. There are discussions about opportunities for Deaf-Blind camp, interpreter cruises to earn CEUs, finding a tutor, free ASL classes and there is even a discussion board with a list of web links for ASL, Deaf culture and interpreter professional development. Check it out!
The files link. Under the files link you will find all the flyers that have been made available for upcoming events and workshops. If you heard about a workshop but can’t find the information, take a look, the flyer is probably on our site. You can also print out flyers from this link to post at your school.
Giving back to the community.
We also try to provide at least one event each year to give back to the Deaf community. Hearing signers and interpreters could have never reached their goals if it were not for the patient Deaf people who helped them develop their language skills along the way. We provide events in which interpreter mentors and mentees may volunteer their time as a way to say thanks to the Deaf community. In 2010 we organized ASL Day at the National Arboretum. In 2011 & 2009 we worked with the International Spy Museum to provide a Deaf Community Night! In 2008 we provided interpreting for the DC Cherry Blossom walking tours through Washington Walks and in 2007 we provided interpreters for the Zoo Lights Christmas event at the National Zoo.
