Overnight backpacking trip to Mt Baden Powell

  • Jun 22, 2013 · 10:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We will backpack to the Baden Powell summit from Dawson's saddle and spend the evening relaxing under the stars and head down in the morning. It is about 4-1/2 miles to the summit the elvation gain about 1500.  Poles are highly recommended! We'll start at 11 so we can get to the summit, set up camp then head out for some "bonus" miles.

Beginning backpackers are welcome however please sign up for this event ONLY if you have experience hiking on difficult trails as you will be carrying more weight than you are accustomed to carrying and you will tire more easily. Mt. Baden Powell has an altitude of 9,406 ft. Make sure that you are accustomed to hiking at higher elevations and be aware of your limitations. Most of the trail is well maintained.

If you are a beginner there are a number of back packing resources online. You can also get help and rental equipment a REI. Remember to keep the pack as light as possible. Be well prepared! You are responsible for your own gear that includes a sleeping bag, pad, food, water, tent and your ten essentials. Bring a flashlight and or a headlamp with fresh batteries. There is no water available on the summit, so bring more than you think you will need! (A minimum of 3 liters, more if you plan on cooking) There are no camp fires allowed so if you plan to cook bring a backpacking stove. Also bring and plenty of food and snacks.

Be prepared to pack out all of your trash!  Each person is responsible for their own comfort on this trip. Dress in warm layers, bring a warm jacket, gloves and a hat because it will get windy and chilly at night. You may decide to sleep under the stars or use a tent; we will watch the weather as the date approaches.

We are going to limit the group size so please sign up for this event only if you have cleared your schedule to to attend.

Thanks to Bob for rescuing me when my car had issues on the way down. The tow truck driver is almost 2 hours late as he got lost and ended up in La Canads...it will be s really funny story of how I spent my Sunday as long as the engine is not in serious trouble!! Thanks again Bob!!!!!!!!

No worries....had I done that going up I may have avoided a rock that apparently cracked my oil pan. Time to get a jeep.
