- Trail Route summary:
This hike will take us 6.4 miles from Baldy Village (4200 feet elevation @ The Trailhead) to Mount Baldy Summit (10,063 feet elevation). Return via Devils Backbone Trail & Ski lifts and shuttle to Baldy Visitor Center.
We start the hike from Baldy Village in front of the Ranger Station. We begin our ascent by heading northwest, through the public area behind Mt. Baldy Church and onto Shaw Avenue. The trail up to the summit begins near the end of Shaw Avenue, turning to the northeast and working its way steadily upward.
After about 1 3/4th of a mile, we reach a small clearing and the primitive Bear Flats campground, and then proceed northeast toward the summit, this time ascending in earnest and more steeply. Though quite strenuous, the trail to the summit is well-worn and easy to follow.
At roughly the halfway point, the route turns more northwest for a time and aims toward West Baldy Peak but then again turns to the northeast after the three-quarter point and makes a fairly straight and gradually-leveling path to the Baldy summit.
Please wear one or more wicking shirts appropriate to the Village and Summit temperatures, comfortable hiking shoes or boots.
Please bring plenty of water, food, a charged cell phone, identification, a headlamp, a signal whistle, a small first-aid kit, bug repellent and sunscreen, sun glasses, a jacket, hat and gloves, a wind/waterproof shell, and any medications or anything else you might need on the trail.
Carry plenty of water and some more!!!
