Mount Islip South Approach, 10 miles 2200' Int/Advanced with Rod

ABOUT THE HIKE: This trail takes us on a loop heading up to where the Windy Gap & PCT meet just off of the 2. From there head up the sunny east ridge of Mt Islip to it's summit, hike down going south on the Big Cienega trail as a loop back to the parking lot. Not a long hike but a good workout!

DISTANCE/DURATION: 10 miles 3-4 hours

DIRECTIONS: From Interstate 210 in Azusa, take Azusa Avenue (Hwy 39) north through Azusa and into the San Gabriel Canyon. After about 12 miles you'll pass the junction of the East Fork Road (8.6 miles from the forest station at the mouth of the canyon). Continue straight approximately 12 more miles. The road gets narrow and curvy in places, so drive carefully. Make a right turn into the signed entrance to the Crystal Lake Recreational Area and drive through the campground. In about a half mile past the snack shop and visitor's center you'll reach a junction where the road heads in five directions with a locked gate straight in front of you. Park in the large dirt lot on the right. The marked trailhead for the Windy Gap Trail is on your left (north) across from the parking area.

A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking.

Loved the shaded, leafy paths and the gradual steady climb with gorgeous views from the top. I've missed that so much! Thanks for making it possible, Rod. So nice to catch up with old and new hikers.

Hey Shantelle, I heading from Chino, that should be alright. As long as you're not allergic to dogs. My dog is not coming in this hike, but he's definitely left a few hairs in my truck.
