Yosemite Camping and Whitewater Rafting on the Merced River

This is going to be a 3 day camping trip to the Yosemite area during Memorial day weekend. We'll have a nice secluded group camping area just outside of Yosemite Valley. The tentative plan is to schedule a river rafting trip on Sunday down the Merced River. Once I have some more time I will get more details and post them. The campsite has already been booked so this is a set trip. I'm working on the reservations for river rafting. Rafting will run about $127.72 (includes wet suit and lunch). 3 nights of camping + firewood will be $23.

Please add yourself to the waiting list if interested. Once I have the final cost and reservations made I will add people. I will need to have met everyone who is going prior to the trip (or a member can vouch for you). This is my new policy on any over night activities. This shouldn't be too difficult since we have 3+ months until the trip.

The location given above is a Von's grocery store in the town of Oakhusrt. It's about 11 miles from the Texas Flats campground. I figured we could stop here for groceries before heading to the campground. The final directions are given below:

Getting There: TEXAS FLATS CA GPS Info. (Latitude, Longitude):[masked], [masked]°23'34"N, 119°34'54"W Take highway 41 through Oakhurst to Road 632, aka "Skyranch Rd.", Right on 632 7 miles, turn southeast on FS Road 6S40 for 1 mile, then northeast on FS Road 6S08 for 1 mile, then North on 6S38 for 2 miles to Texas Flat Campground.

Review of the campground:

Top 5 Reasons to go on this trip (Merced - Wild Water):

  1. The Merced is particularly fun at high water (just ask the guides)
  2. Yosemite can be LOTS of fun too
  3. Camping in a non-crowed campsite near Yosemite.
  4. Ned's Gulch and Quarter Mile Rapid!!!!
  5. Fishing, hiking, mountain biking - add a day to your raft trip!

This was my first trip completely 'roughing it', and the snow was a shock! The great thing about this group is that no one leaves you stranded. We shivered together, conquered the pothole filled road together, were amazed at the wonders of Yosemite and bounced along the rapids of Yosemite. It sure was an amazing trip...but that shower at home was the best ever!!! Thanks again Jason!

It was my 1st meetup with this group and I came with 2 other girlfriends. It was great meeting everyone. Bunch of nice, fun, friendly people. Jason did a great job organizing and making sure things are running smoothly. Thanks a million to Olga for the use of the tent. You're a life saver.

Ps: the driver of my carpool is using a Garmin gps, and its directions match google. So don't rely on your GPS!

I just talked to Jason, and he said the google directions are wrong. He asked me to post the directions that are listed on recreation.gov:

From Fresno, take Highway 41 north to Sky Ranch Road (6S10), turn right and travel east 8.2 miles to Road 6S40. Turn right and travel 1.5 miles to Road 6S08. Turn left and travel north for 8/10 of a mile to Road 6S38. Turn left and travel 2 miles to Texas Flat Campground.

The good news is that it's going to be warm and sunny on Sunday while we raft...The not so great is that it could rain tomorrow with possible thunder storms...but I actually like that kind stuff.

Hey I've got a family event Saturday but will be looking for photos of this outing... and please put me in the list for the next round (hopefully this Summer?). Be safe and have great fun Jason and co.

Before you go use the following map link to get driving directions from your starting point.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?q=N%2037%B0%2023.542%20W%20119%B0%2035.017

From Glendale it's 271 miles. It says 5hrs but Google assumes driving 60 mph on the Hwy. We are not meeting at Von's. I just put that because there is no address Meetup would recognize for the campground. But you can go to Von's and pickup food.

If you want to stock up on some camping gear...Big 5 usually has some cheap stuff....REI is more expensive but they have a sale the weekend...see link http://www.rei.com/Sale+and+Clearance

We will stock up on food at the grocery store. You can go to Vons which is the is shown as the meeting location. Directions to the campground are given in the description. Please be sure to bring plenty of water because there is no potable water at the campground. I know a few of us are bringing propane stoves, so we can share. You should bring your own propane canister which you can buy at any sporting goods store. I'll send out more info this weekend.

What are we doing re food? Are we cooking as a group? Everybody hunts by themselves? Driving to some village somewhere?

  • Sarah

I would love to see the falls and Mirror Lake. What's the latest on the carpools?

The group will not be doing Half Dome....but you are welcome to do it on your own...A permit is required and they have already been issued for 2012. ..50 daily permits are provided in a lottery but you have to apply 2 days before, which would mean a Thursday application. So Unless you drive up early or already have a permit it won’t be an option.

I paid both rafting and $23.

    February 24, 2012

  • Jason

Unless you have arranged something with me, then tomorrow the people on the going list who haven't paid for their rafting spots will be moved back to the waiting list and others will take their spot.

    February 23, 2012

  • Jason

If someone drops out then an e-mail is sent to those on the waiting list informing them of an available spot. The space is available on a first come first serve basis. Cliff and A.N. were both the first to react and take the available spot.

The only problem with that is we've already sold out at the camp site and rafting spots with Whitewater Voyages. If someone can find another campsite and room with another rafting company and they want to host it then I could post it.

    February 16, 2012

  • Jason

BTW, if you don't have Monday off for Memorial day (May 28th) and you need to drive home Sunday night then please let me know via e-mail.

    February 16, 2012

  • Jason

When calling the rafting company make sure to give them your size for a wet suit. They will ask for height and weight. I don't really want to collect that information later on when we need to size everyone up for wet suits.

Ok Thanks Jason I haven't done a white water raft trip in a while and the last time I did it was Lake Isabella area we laughed the whole way down! :) I hope I can make it when is the cut-off and is there a place for others that are offering to share a tent? Also carpooling options... I am coming from Inland Empire would share the expense and the driving duties.

    February 9, 2012

  • Jason

If you go there are plenty of options for tents. You can rent one, borrow one, share one, or buy a really cheap one if you don't plan on camping often. Our last camping trip was awesome and I expect this one to be even better.
