Camping and Whitewater Rafting (Class 3/4) on the Kern River

  • Jul 20, 2012 · 5:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Please add yourself to the waiting list. Our group has reserved all 30 available rafting spots.

The $25 is payment for 2 nights camping only. The rafting is a separate fee of $162.24 (see info below).

2 day camping trip with rafting on Sunday during the weekend of July 20th - 22nd on the Lower Kern.

The plan is to drive up Friday and camp, then hike and lounge by the river on Saturday. Afterwards we'll go back to the campsite for the night to relax and share stories about the day and whatever else. The campsite has a wall for climbing if people are interested. (Note - If you can't go Friday, then you can drive up anytime Saturday)

Campsite: "If you come to Kernville to just get away from it all, our campground is a great place to relax. With amenities such as sand and grass volleyball, shuffle board, horseshoe pits and convenient river access to fully relax and enjoy. We also encourage you to join us in helping to preserve the ecology of the Kern River. "

Rafting : We will start rafting on Sunday morning at 8am. "Our Lower Kern, Class IV river trips are nice, long and continuous river trips. Our Lower Kern run is about twelve miles of river with a series of eight Class IV rapids, which will have your adrenaline pumping all day long. We stop for a freshly prepared deli-style lunch and, if time permits, a stop at the "jump rock" where you can plunge into the river from new heights." Rafting will finish up between 3 and 4pm, which gives everyone plenty of time to get home early Sunday night. This is so much more fun then the class III rafting other groups usually do. Class III runs generally involve a lot of paddling and not much whitewater.

Cost: This is a full day of class IV rafting on the most popular river in SoCal, but we are getting a nice discount. The reason I have scheduled the rafting on a Sunday is to get the price as low as I can and was also able to negotiate a deal for both camping and rafting. The rafting cost is $162.24/person. You'll need to call Whitewater Voyages and pay them directly. Just call[masked] and use reference #39093 and my name or the group. Your spot is not guaranteed until you have made your payment to the rafting company. The cost for 2 nights of camping is a seperate fee of $25. The campgrounds are probably the best in the area. We stayed here last year and it was very comfortable. They have flush toilets and hot showers.

Food:
Eat dinner on your way up Fri night. Bring food for breakfast on Sat & Sun. There will be restaurants and markets available for food for lunch & dinner on Sat. Lunch is provided on Sunday by the rafting company

Things to bring:
Shoes you can get wet, one gallon of drinking water per person per day, water bottle, snacks, comfortable shoes to hike in, food for breakfast on Sat & Sun, a sweatshirt for night time, flashlight, sunscreen, sun glasses, hat, camera, one camp chair per person, and camping gear (sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent).
- Sleeping bag: rent, or buy for around $30 at Costco, Big 5, Sport Chalet, Target
- Sleeping Pad: rent, or buy for around $10 for a foam pad at an army surplus store
- Tent: borrow, make friends with someone with extra space, rent, or purchase.
- Flashlight: $1 at the 99 Cent Store
- Rent: rent these items at REI, Adventure 16, Sport Chalet

Jason, Thank you so much for a fantastic White water Rafting trip. I have gone white water rafting couple of times before - both in the east coast on the delaware and here on the Kern River - but it was never with this abundance of confidence, yet fun and relaxing environment - must be the company of the Argonauts! The guides were awesome - they had so much knowledge of the river and how to navigate each rapid, twist and turn. The amazing thing I learnt was that the river and the flow has so much power, momentum and force, that going down in the raft, it was not about one's physical strength or power, but more about the skillful use of the force the river's momentum provided. I learnt this from our raft guide Jordan. He pretty much augmented that with right set of commands at the right turn. We enjoyed the beautiful nature of the Kern river valley. Thank you for an amazing experience. Can't wait to get together for the next adventure with the Argonauts.

Yeah... I didn't really want to go to a group bike tour, just found out that there are good mountain biking opportunities. That's all :)

@Victoria - That sounds awesome, but I think we need to have a group of 6 to be able to do the paid biking tour :( do we have 6 people interested? Or do you know the area and we can bike on our own?
@Jodie - yes Jodie, we have room for 1 more... so you are welcome to crash with us too.

Hi Olga, do you have another spot left in the tent? I am also without one and would rent one otherwise. No problem at all if you are "full already:-). Looking forward meeting you guys!

@Viktoria - I have a big tent that fits 4 people, so if you want to stay with us (me and possibly my 13 yr old son) you are more than welcome... I am also going to try my best to bring my bike too, since we never have done it in the past...

Kelly....There is space...the waiting list is just for people who haven't paid for the rafting trip...So if you go and put a $75 deposit down with the rafting company then you'll have a confirmed spot.

I think they have mountain bike trails there...but I'm not positive...Might be worth it, but not sure who else would go mountain bike riding

Is there anywhere to mountain bike around? Worth to bring a bike?

    May 9, 2012

  • Jason

Only 9 spaces left for those of you who haven't paid the deposit on the rafting trip. I will move those whom haven’t paid to the waiting list, so that you know if you need to call to confirm your spot. The deposit is $75. Don’t worry too much about the commitment, because we always have people last minute who are looking to go and can replace you if needed.

So far only Doug and Sarah have paid the $75 deposit to the rafting company. We have until the end of the week to pay the deposit before they make the spots available to the public once again. Because of the procrastination I will need to cross post this with other groups to fill at least 12 spots, which qualifies us for the group discount. We only need to pay the deposit, if something comes up and you can't go, then there shouldn't be a problem finding a replacement.

    April 24, 2012

  • Jason

I have 20 spaces reserved with the rafting company....So as you can see I allowed more then that to RSVP. Please call Whitewater Voyages and make your reservation to secure your spot. If needed I can get more spaces if they are still available. Call[masked] and use reference #39093

    April 19, 2012

  • Stephanie

I'll pay as soon as I'm bumped up off the wait list. fingers crossed!

    April 18, 2012

  • Jason

That is correct...The normal rafting cost for the Class IV all day rafting on the Lower Kern is $203. We got a 20% group discount to make it $162. I booked the camping separately because I love this campground and it's clean with hot showers. The campground is actually run buy another rafting company who wanted $206 total for rafting and camping. Using their campground and another rafting company saved about $20/person.
