New and pending members PLEASE READ!
Thank you for your interest in the Triangle Hiking and Outdoors Group (THOG). We are "un"officially on the the largest hiking and outdoors group in the Triangle area! We are a VOLUNTEER group and there are no membership fees and dues. Some activities (ie overnight trips, trips via commercial outfitters) have fees but these are passed on AT COST with no "profit" to us. We certainly will accept any donations (running this website does cost $$$) but we are happy if you just want to participate! We are doing this because we are outdoor NUTS and are passionate about sharing this with others in the community.YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 21 YEARS OLD TO JOIN THOG
Certain events allow members to bring guests that are under 21 of age and the member is responsible for all actions of their guests.
To join THOG, click here
and fill out of a profile. Here are a few tips for filling out your profile:
1) Do not include any personal information (ie phone number or e-mail addresses) Our pages are not private, thus, your profile information will be visible to everyone including programs designed to capture e-mail addresses for spammers. You can always receive e-mail via the meetup message system if you choose to activate it.
2) You do not need to list your last name. It is helpful if you use a last initial so we can tell the difference between Rob S and Rob T. If you wish to change your "name" click on account (on the right upper corner) and you can edit your name at any time.
that you fill out each profile question completely. If you have an incomplete profile (ie unanswered questions or one word answers), your request will be declined or become indefinitely pending. Our experience is that if you aren't willing to spend 2 minutes completing a few questions, you're not going to be active. We want ACTIVE members, not MINOs (members in name only). We REQUIRE
a photo. Again, you are requesting to join a group that meets in public places. Don't you want us to know who to look for? We frown on using aliases (ie anything but your real name) because it makes it REALLY difficult to identify you at an event. So, unless you want to be called "Nobody", "Chipmunk" or "Crazy" please fill in something else!
OK, now that you are a member of THOG, what now? Well, events are posted on the event board. If you want to attend, RSVP "yes." If you are unable to attend or do not wish to attend, simply do nothing! You do not need to RSVP "no" Our events fill up FAST... therefore if you RSVP "yes" and cannot attend, PLEASE change your RSVP to "no" ASAP. If you want to attend a FULL event, simply e-mail the event leader, but do not be upset if the leader cannot accommodate you. WE FREQUENTLY CAN ACCOMMODATE those on the WAIT LIST! IF YOU CANNOT RSVP, then the event is not open to additional members at the present time.
This sounds great... but I have suggestions/feedback... what do I do? If you have a constructive feedback, feel free to write the organizer at any time! The best way to get our attention is to post a message on the MESSAGE BOARD
. Several organizers check these pages on a daily basis! If you just want to complain for no reason, we will teleport your complaints to mars. Until we get our weather machine to work (which is not anytime soon) we CANNOT control the weather! Rain is an integral part of our climate. Without it, you wouldn't get all those leafy green things to grow all around you. It does get COLD here too. After all, we are in central NC, not southern FL. In the summer, trips start EARLY so we aren't experiencing the NC sauna (you will hear the 3Hs that is hot, hazy and humid. Not comfortable hiking weather). Trip limits are done to ensure that everyone has a good outdoor experience (and not just for us, but for the other visitors too). If after reading this, you still want to complain, we will be glad to sell you a page on our website for $1 million dollars.
Finally, we are NOT a singles group. If you are joining us to help enhance your dating life, we will redirect you to http://singles.meetup...
. We are activities based and you will find activities such as hiking, backpacking, camping, kayaking, biking, dancing, skiing, etc. You won't find dinners, social mixers, etc. Well, that's about it! Oh, if you really want to impress a THOG organizer, the secret code is "Coyote Buttes." Knowing this tells us that you read this entire page! BTW, Coyote Buttes is not a joke, or a play on words. It is a real place located in the Paria-Vermillion Cliffs NRA on the UT/AZ border that contains some of the most stunning landscapes in the world. You can see photos of it here
