San Antonio, TX
No. You don't need anything special to run trails other than what you'd usually run with.
However, not trails are the same, and not all trail runs are the same.
Shoes: Trail Running Shoes have treads designed to grip rough surfaces better than road running shoes. They also often have features that keep you from feeling the uneven elements of trails like rocks and roots.
Trail running can often involve longer run times so you should be prepared; particularly with regards to water and food.
You should approach trail running the same way you would approach going on a hike. Know the conditions of your hike and dress and prepare accordingly.
Some people like gaiters. They fit over the tops of your shoes and and ankles and prevent small rocks and other detritus from getting into your shoes.
If your run starts before sunrise or may continue past sunset you should be prepared with some kind of lighting.
