Welcome to All Things Baroque! The idea of the group is to celebrate baroque culture in all its forms, and music in particular. London was home to two of the greatest ever Baroque composers - Henry Purcell (a Westminster lad) and George Frideric Handel (who chose to make this great city his home).
It so happens that 2009 marks the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death and the 350th anniversary of Purcell’s birth so there will be plenty going on this year.
There are always world class performances of music by Baroque maestros Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi on offer in London. We are spoilt for choice for concert venues.
We will also be investigating examples of Baroque art and architecture in London. The Victoria and Albert Museum is launching a major baroque art exhibition in 2009.
The Baroque style in architecture never caught on in England in the same way it did in Europe but there are nevertheless some fine examples – St Paul’s Cathedral being one of the most famous.
Baroque London awaits!
