Breathtaking view of the South Bay are the reward for those who take on the climb to the top of Mission Peak. This is an out-and-back trail. We will travel 3 1/2 miles to the top of the peak and then back down the same way.
We'll start by taking the Ohlone Wilderness Trail / Hidden Valley Trail, left at the fork at the trail head. We will stay on this trail until we reach the foot of the last summit. Here we will turn right on Peak Trail and climb the last half mile to the summit.
This is a challenging hike, not for the wary. Polls are recommended (but not necessary), more so for the downhill. The hike is primary exposed so remember sunscreen. A hat is probably a good idea too. Please remember to bring lots of water (more than you think you need), some type of electrolyte replacement (gatoraid, shot blocks, sports beans) and snacks. We'll hang out at the top for awhile soaking up the views while taking a well deserved break.
Although this hike is a bit of a climb, it is well worth the effort. The views from the top are wonderful. Not to mention the sense of accomplishment you'll have when you get there.
Carpooling if recommended. Meet at 7:15 am at Starbucks on the corner of Bascom Avenue and Hwy 85. Park in the underground parking area. If you are planning on meeting there, post a comment.
Anyone interested in carpooling with me, I'll be at Best Buy on Almaden at 7:30 AM : )
I'll meet the group there and start out with you but I have a commitment in the afternoon so i likely will turn back early.
Heard rain for Saturday on forecast...hike still on with moderate rain?
Rain in Fremont is only predicted from midnight to 2AM, not the rest of the day...
Okay - Is everyone ready for tomorrow? Even though it's cooler outside, please bring plenty of water. Bring a lunch and we'll hang out at the top, eat some food and enjoy the view. For those who would like to do a hike but don't want all the uphill, there is a loop you can do. It's a little less in milage, still fairly difficult but with half the uphill. I'll have maps for both trails. Please change your RSVP if your plans have changed and are not able to make it. See you all in the morning!!
Kimberley and All -- Arrived at trailhead at 8:00 and couldn't find parking within half a mile. Seems to be a large group of folks interested in hiking today despite the drizzle. I'm bowing out at the last minute and I apologize. Please don't wait for me!
Kim, Francisca, and Kelly - So very sorry we lost you!!! I hope that the three of you still had a good time with each other.
No worries, we were not lost...followed the map for the left turn...let's just say we had a great workout & conversation!
Don't be scared! You can do it!
